Do people think you're a pretentious music asshole?

Often times I try introduce Autechre to people. Why? 'Cause I fucking love Autechre. Anyway, it's tough because the casual listener* assumes I'm pretentious for even humoring the idea of Autechre's music. It's disappointing because, like many here, i'm quite serious about their work. Anyway does this happen to anyone else? Has anyone ever successfully introduced Autechre, or similar, work to casual listeners? One complaint I hear pretty consistently from casual listeners is that Autechre sounds "boring". WTF?

most people i come into contact think im a pretentious asshole from the get go. i dont ever get to the point of discussing music.

you gotta keep in mind a lot of people think that david bowie only made Ziggy Stardust and Lets Dance, and that Kraftwerk is for gay Germans.

My friends just call it Robot Sex. Every time I drive they'd be like "oh no not the robot sex again." I just laugh every time. Some times I'd be nice and put on BOC other times I'm like spoon feeding them Venetian Snares. I'd rather they suffered by my music then I suffer by theirs, especially when I'm driving.

My sis is is the only person I know who can't stand what I listen to so its like WW2 every time we are in the car together. We are like polar opposites when it comes to music.

i don't think people care about your musical tastes as much as you think they do. you should also possibly take this as a sign to stop evangelising your music to people who are indifferent at best. keep them as your own dirty little secret. IDM club.

idm nerds always think they have the best, most obscure taste in music. they also think that people are very interested to learn about IDM because they assume people are as curious about it as they are. can you imagine being the kind of person who sits in a quiet library or coffeeshop, blasting your stupid computer bleeps through your outrageously huge headphones just to try and elicit a response from someone? "OH MY GOD WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO? IT SOUNDS LIKE A MATRIX!" i think a lot of idm nerds fantasize about these kinds of scenarios.

This is precisely why I have my windows down rain, hot or cold and blast 54 CYMru beats while the African American next to me is blasting paul wall or the cacausin chick is blasting Britney Spears.

Mostly they just think I'm a music asshole, like "this asshole really likes music to the point where he's kind of an asshole." I think they usually buy that I genuinely really like/really dislike whatever it is that I'm listening to. Little do they know it's all an act and I can't stand music/myself.

IDM club.

Sounds like great fun.

Some people need to realize that listening to IDM doesn't make them special or smarter. It could have been the case 12 years ago, when it was still fresh, but now listening to IDM and boasting about it just makes you dorky and quite late on the musical evolution scheme, so you better hide indeed. Shame on you IDM fanboy.

Personally I tend to be considered a pretentious asshole when I make snarky comments about music people are listening to, not whn I mention the music I like.

Erm. That's exactly what I was saying. If you think I'm honestly proud to belong to an idm club I think you've terribly misjudged the tone of my post cause I can't imagine anything worse.

i don't really try to get people to listen to what i listen to because, as has been said in this thread, most people just plain don't like weird wonky staticky bleep bloop retrigger bullshit so why even bother? but i listen to it enough that people have noticed that i listen to it so i'm still that crazy broad that listens to weird static shit. oh well i could care less.

i also listen to loads of 80s stuff so i can at least connect with a lot of people on that level?

I listen to such vast variety and find something to connect with almost everybody on a musical level usually, so I talk about that rather than push teh idmz to others. Thus not looking like a know-it-all-douche (although I know my knowledge is superior)

Other people do, I like to think I'm not and I certainly try not to come off that way. But there are people out there who automatically think I'm a pretentious music asshole (or whatever term they see is appropriate) simply because I like stuff they never heard of. For example lots of people I know listen to only 70s rock because music has been "shit" since. If that isn't being a pretentious music asshole I don't know what to say to them. Isn't my fault they can't take the time to find good stuff that's recent. And even if I were to tell them "hey I know you like Zeppelin and The Doors, check out The Black Angels and Black Mountain!" The usual response is something defensive because they don't want to get outside of their classic rock radio comfort zone.

Anyways, I don't even bother explaining this idm stuff. I just say I like electronic and leave it at that. My lil sis likes Wisp and Christ. though. Says it makes my car feel like some spaceship when I play it in there.

I think I probably am to some people; if you mention the names of record labels or postulate who might have influenced who or what instruments were used then you will probably come off as a smug music prick sometimes. To be honest most conversations about music turn into one-upmanship, ohmigod you haven't heard this EP, oRLY u didnt no that guy was in this band lol etc
