the visual cortex is located at the back of your head.

the auditive cortex is located near your ears.

The olfactive cortex is behind your forehead.

 

Synaesthesia is caused by neural bridges linking one area to another one.

A A-->B syneasthesia is more likely to happen if the areas corresponding to these modalities are close to each other.

That's why grapheme->color synaesthesia is the more frequent type of synaesthesia : graphemes and colors are treated by the visual cortex.

sound->color is pretty frequent too. sound->smell seems to be less frequent. Yet the auditive cortex seems to be as far from the olfactive cortex than it is from the visual cortex. mmmhh *strokes chin*

I don't smell music. But I do visualise a calender 3 dimensionally. Like a giant loop, probably best described as a roller coaster track.

I have synesthaesia, which means I can perceive colours and shapes when I hear sound, but I don't experience smells. Occasionally I perceive tastes, but I'm not sure if that's just my imagination.

 

I'd love to draw some of the textures I see when I hear certain tracks one day, but for the time being, I'm not good enough at drawing to adequately depict them.

the sound of a smell is to be treasured dearly for all time! as is the picture of a sound. and even the picture of the sound of a smell, though it's tough to actually pull that one off, kind of a once in a lifetime thing i'd imagine.

i remember working on a song one night, having consumed some research powders.

 

i'd arranged a late dinner of shake-n-bake (breaded pork chops). i let them overcook a bit, as i was more focused on my song. but i brought a pair down and started eating while working. nothing of note for a bit -- eat, work, eat, work. noises were pretty intense in my skull, though. noises i imagined almost felt heard.

 

thinking of a flange noise, i took a bite of the pork chop, and the sensory experiences combined. i had the sense of the shape of the flange being a waveform maybe ten feet long, and it literally flowed through the crunch of the pork chop. like, put a point at my left back molars where i'm crushing this overcooked, crunchy pork chop. i'm sitting still. as i cruuuuunch, that ten foot flange wave flows through the precise crunch point, and it all becomes a unified experience.

 

stopped eating the pork chop after that. the song was winning; it was no use.

Olfactophilia preferably, but its impossible to separate the two. The smell of pennies getting sweaty in a clenched fist sounds like "Foil" on Amber.

i've always kind of visualized things in my head to music, but it's a deliberately constructed thing.

 

on the other end is synaesthesia proper, which just kind of happens. much different than closing your eyes and drawing something.

 

for ages i have wanted them to meet in the middle. like the unification of relativity and quantum mechanics
