the inescapable onslaught of blu ray

well it looks like we are being forced to buy yet another piece of equipment to "keep up with the current format"

anyone walk into best buy lately?

90% of their new stock is on blu ray

i call FUCKING BULLSHIT

I am happy with dvds and still buy plenty of VHS tapes for a dollar at thrifts and flea markets

obviously i am ranting but it's just a symptom of "consumer culture" and it really sucks balls.

It's not like my opinion matters or will make any difference up against some monolithic corp rot nation,

but I can't help but cringe at the philosophy of "YOU NEED THIS NOW" being jammed down my throat.

That's called progress, and it's hardly a sudden thing - Blu Ray has been around for more than 5 years now. Before your VHS and DVD, there was 8mm and 16mm film, and before that there was just radio, and before that, just books and the spoken word.

Time to move into the 21st century, and rather than resist it, embrace the benefits new technology brings.

I have one Bluray (Back to the Future), but don't really plan on buying any more. There is a place for physical copies, but I'm expecting an embrace of cloud computing too.

I like the format though. Console games on Bluray discs. :ok:

oddly enough, the best buy in union square nyc has FAR more dvds than blu-rays—same with kim's on 1st avenue. i think you're exaggerating a bit here. that being said

corp rot nation

come on. i can't tell if this entire thread is even serious, or if this is a parody of something else

I fucking hate DVD's. The quality is hollible. Either bring back laserdisc or bring on Blu-Ray. Laserdisc had a beautiful quality to it that portray films in a cinematic format. DVD's should be used for audio standard (digitally speaking).

I've been enjoying HD (I have HD cable) but I haven't upgraded to BluRay, as I would have to replace hundreds of DVDs in order to get everything up to speed. I'm not in a financial position to do that just yet and DVDs don't look that bad on my HD TV.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) Blu-Ray = FTW

also

Mad Max on blu-ray = drool.

When is Herzog going to put his earlier stuff out on Blu-ray? That's what I want to know!

I have BluRays so I can watch movies that I really enjoy, at home, in very high resolution, without sitting in a crowded theater with all of you loud, obnoxious wankers, and with minimal restrictions on my ownership of the copy. Also the disc costs about the same as some single viewing mass market 3D theater-going wankfest experience.

DVDs looks like ass, but my blu ray player also plays them just fine, and makes them look a little nicer on a high def TV, all the same. I doubt many people are going to replace their season 3 of Buffy DVD set just because they now have a BR player.

Also, DVDs are still readily available.

What a stupid fucking thread.

Complaining about having to purchase a Bluray player in 2012 to 'keep up with the current format' is like complaining about having to upgrade from a 28kbps modem to a 56kbps modem in 2003 because AOL's home page is getting too graphically intense.

PC World website had a 500gb external hard drive for £25 so i was going to get it for my sis.. but it was only available to collect in store, which is fine because i can't buy stuff online anyway (well, i sort of can but can't be bothered, esp. the delivery shit.. too much worry). so i went in, they didn't have it. the cheapest one was like £50 and was 1tb... i was like nah, i was looking for a 500gb one that costs £25, the woman showed me a 500gb portable one that was £80... it wasn't the 500gb part that was appealing

my sister doesn't even need 500gb

fuck advancement... it's just money making

apart from things like blu ray

Not trying to be a cunt here, but your post says more about PC World and their fucking appalling customer service, rather than anything to do with tech advancement.

But I have no problem with this, because I hate PC World with a passion.
