What would be the relevant criteria to include ? Sufficient and / or necessary conditions for a loser to be considered a looser.

A few possible answers:

- someone who never accomplishes anything ?

- someone who never accomplishes anything he wants to ?

- someone who has no friends ?

ANd would there be any redeeming qualities, something that would exclude one to be in the loser list ?

Watmm away.

The definition of loser has been lost for sometime. At this point in time, the word loser is used to categorize people who deviate from soceital norms, or have unusal interests. The word is no different from "lame".

Being a loser is that feeling when you look at everyone else and feel like they're all having so much more fun than you.

It's when the happy bubbly people say "come on man, come ______ with us!"

and you're like "...hehe, yeah man that would be cool but I actually am overdrawn on my debit card...and...uh...i...just..."

and they're already walking away and you just kind of look on with a slight frown, smoke a cigarrette and go drink alone in your tiny room

Certainly none of us. Seriously, you are all cool people who like idm. IDM is not loser. IDM is winner. We are the winners. Less so until Exai is leaked but none the less we are 20 times more winning than non-idm people. It's kind of sad.

and that's when you call yourself a loser.

actual losers are that guy you were kind of friends in middle school with, who now when you go back to your hometown you meet on the street and he asks you for weed and talks about his rotating lists of 14-year old girlfriends

I was going to write that!

Even more loser LOL.

To me a loser is someone that when finds a problem does nothing to solve it. I'm a loser myself sometimes...

Someone caught in negative energy thought-loops, due to an overwhelming internal assimilation of subjects/objects that represent threats to one's capacity for fulfillment. Either unable or unwilling to spot where and why they go wrong, so they won't stop focusing on their obstacles. A lack of self control causing obsessively detrimental spirals, harming themselves and everyone around them. Note that accomplishment is subjective and not dictated by society.

The one possible redeeming quality of a loser lifestyle is not causing harm to others.

a person is only a loser when they feel a deep sense of shame about their monetary situation (buying a hat for their dog and overdrawing on a debit card half starving eating soy sauce etc)

the worst feeling a loser can have is trying to buy expensive shit but having their card denied with a line of people behind them (edit: the illusion created by their "nice" jacket falls away as their brow starts to sweat and the creeping feeling of self-hatred arises from the bottom)

if you're "cool" with your financial situation, no matter how bad, you are not a loser

a loser is by definition clinicaly depressed and a "mommas boy" as well as overweight

being a loser is really extremely close to being clinically depressed

Someone that has various options of making his life better yet makes bad decisions all the time and gets stuck with lousy results.

I like this definition.

What if this person had extroardinary emotional intelligence ? what if this person had extroardinary compassion and helped people a lot ? I guess he wouldn't be a loser....

Isn't that called "depression"...

I believe this a very american way of seeing things. There are many countries where your are not defined by your financial situation

example of how to overcome being a "loser": the Dude, really anyone in the Big Lebowski

arguably Bruno S. in Stroszek

@tAF: agreed, I think it should be revised to being a person whose decisions in life constantly fail them

it's tied into financial situation very intimately though, because when I say "in life" I mean their ability to maintain a good, responsible life for themselves

A person that has never accomplished a thing in their lives and will never accomplish anything. Personally, I feel that it's a really harsh term, so I tend not to use it.

No, in that case 50% of humanity would be depressed. A loser lifestyle can cause depression and other types of destructive behavior, but they are not the same. My definition includes people who are caught up in societal expectations and the idea that financial or relationship problems constitute matters that deserve brainspace. Most other posts in this thread circulate around defining people who don't go home and fuck the prom queen. I don't think that constitutes a loser because he/she might be content and a good person.

A lot of people aren't very content and are obsessive about their issues, but you wouldn't call them depressed.
