Amazon today had an HD TiVO Premiere for 49.99USD (normally 299.00) and it seemed like such a great deal (and I ordered it) until I read about the 20USD/month plan they lock you into for a year (and afterwards, the rate may not change nor be able to apply lifetime memberships to it), and then decided to cancel as it wasn't worth the expense. I've never personally used one or seen one in person, but how much better is it than the cable company's typically crappy electronic program guide and DVR functions (I want it more for the EPG than the DVR stuff). So, anyone have a TiVO (or have had one), and what was your experience with it like?

Recommend me a book 1 2 3 4

So I have some time to waste at work, and need a recommendation for a good read. Ive never really been big on on books, but to give you some idea of what I like - the only book Ive ever read which Ive become properly absorbed in is House of Leaves. Ive kinda enjoyed the Haruki Marukami books and and a bit of SciFi with Iain M banks. Basically I like to read something deep and thought-provoking with a mysterious/surreal edge to it, whilst still maintaining a good narrative. Give it to me!

do the sounds that rhyme in English work in other languages? do the sounds that rhyme fr us get used in the same sense for poetry, songs and raps in other parts of the world? or do they not rely heavily on rhyming in their work like the English speaking parts of the world do?

http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata Otomata is a generative sequencer. It employs a cellular automaton type logic I’ve devised to produce sound events. Each alive cell has 4 states: Up, right, down, left. at each cycle, the cells move themselves in the direction of their internal states. If any cell encounters a wall, it triggers a pitched sound whose frequency is determined by the xy position of collision, and the cell reverses its direction. If a cell encounters another cell on its way, it turns itself clockwise. This set of rules produces chaotic results in some settings, therefore you can end up with never repeating, gradually evolving sequences. Go…

I'm sure some of you have seen these videos on youtube. Looks like some really insightful stuff, and I would like to get one of the volumes, but if you go to the website it's just a bunch of bogus flash, and feels like one of those incorrect url sites (http://apppel.com/). They seem to have been for sale on boomkat, but no longer. It's not so much to learn about production, it's just interesting to see some of these people speak about their work. Anyone know anything?

nowadays, youngsters tend to use the phrase 'yeah, right..'.. to express that they think the person talking to them has uttered a nonsense. in years past, people used to use more imaginative phrases such as, "my eye", and.. "in a pig's ear" what fun phrases can you think of to use in this context?

Ugh. I once had to stop there for directions coming back from Vegas. That huge slaughterhouse outside of Bakersfield gives me a huge headache. When it comes up on the I-5, I play a game where I see how long I can hold my breath. Actually, it's not so much a game, I just try to hold my breath for as long as possible. Hah !! @ smells you're driving past. We had to drive through the longest smell affected area i've ever been through once. It was in northern NSW a week or so after some floods had covered about an 100 kilometre stretch of cane fields that lay on either side of the highway. If you know the smell of rotting hay, then think about all the suga…

I live in LA now 1 2 3

I just moved here last week from Brooklyn, NY. We just rented an apt in the hills just north of Hollywood by the Hollywood Bowl. It's kinda cool here, but I don't know shit about LA. It seems like there are a ton of serious fucking douchebags here. I was hoping some of you guys could inundate me with basic info about what is cool to do here, what LA life is like and little tricks I may need to know. I know I need to get a car really soon. I'm borrowing a friend's car and have learned that you basically cannot live here without one. Any info on that front is particularly helpful (ie: car strategies, rentals/leasing/used cars/insurance/etc... I literally know nothing ab…

It is coming up to my girlfriend and I's 4-year anniversary of going out. We live together and I'm thinking about some ideas. She isn't one for presents so I want to do something fun and special. Any ideas? And don't be douchebags. I am so going to regret this

1. First, I am incredibly lazy and unmotivated. I don't really have a drive besides for avoiding doing what I have to do. If I could only convince myself that fun and work were reversed. And believe me I love my job... it's not that. It's just that I like doing absolutely nothing like cruising internets and then playing my drums for like 45 mins and then eating some food and then having a nap with my cat and then checking shit out on kijiji, listen to music and chill with online/offline friends, eat, smoke weed and watch "platoon" or read Tolstoy while drifting to sleep, more than working in my sweet profession. 2. I don't try to be the best at anything. I just get g…

Freelance Computer Work?
by Guest El_Chemso- 5 replies

At School (Computer Science school) they said to us that a lot of under grads and grads make a good amount of money doing freelance work. I've known a few friends do it who have done computer degrees. So what's the best places to look, places to avoid. Your experiences good bad? We were told by on lecture that the uni's don't like it as it mess' up there employment rate after 6 months of graduation as so many Comp Sci grads do free lance work until they find there perfect job, and on the stats that doesn't count as employment so there must be some good stuff out there.
