I have been hearing a lot about this, but I am fairly clueless as to what exactly that means. http://www.npr.org/2011/04/08/135239853/whats-closed-and-whats-not-in-a-shutdown This helped to clear some things up, but it still seems pretty ridiculous.

So I've got two problems facing me here. First of all, I have to get my computer overseas without breaking it. I'm thinking of taking it apart, packing the individual parts in static bags and padding them with bubble wrap and packing it into my carry-on, and throw the case in my luggage so I can avoid paying fed ex all of my money. Any reason that would be a bad idea? Secondly, power conversion might be a problem. Is it simply a matter of buying a power cord that has a European plug? I've also got a monitor and speakers to contend with. I'm sure I'll need new speakers, but does anyone know if my monitor will have problems over there? I'd hate to have to either pay lik…

Who's having a flutter on the big dogs this weekend? Know of any gambling websites offering a good deal? My wild punts will probably be Arbor Supreme and Oscar Time. But I don't really have any idea of who might actually win it. Let me know who tips what and I might keep the list below updated. 1) P1-P000 DON'T PUSH IT (IRE) Sky News ToteSport Ladbrokes 2) 04-3226 TIDAL BAY (IRE) 3) 211-524 WHAT A FRIEND Telegraph Sky News 4) 1B-0044 VIC VENTURI (IRE) 5) U62/1-31 MAJESTIC CONCORDE (IRE) Guardian 6) 42F14 OR NOIR DE SOMOZA (FR) 7) 1F24-41 DOONEYS GATE (IRE) 8) 14-2F44 BIG FELLA THANKS Telegraph 9) 205-244 THE TOTHER ONE (I…

As I'm intensely fascinated with US culture (much in the way someone is fascinated with a nuclear bomb explosion, it's too big and noisy to look away from), I started wondering about something. There's a fuckload of noise about slavery and mexicans, but how do you guys look at the native americans? Why haven't there been more stunts like the one by marlon brando? On some level I can't help but notice the irony in having such a pride over a country that was acquired through theft, as I understand it. It wouldn't be so interesting if it wasn't for the gargantuan amount of patriotism you guys have (maybe not you watmmer aspies but I mean, the flag is everywhere, the…

The simplest and most popular cosmological model today predicts that you have a twin in a galaxy about 10 to the 10 28 meters from here. This distance is so large that it is beyond astronomical, but that does not make your doppelgänger any less real. The estimate is derived from elementary probability and does not even assume speculative modern physics, merely that space is infinite (or at least sufficiently large) in size and almost uniformly filled with matter, as observations indicate. In infinite space, even the most unlikely events must take place somewhere. There are infinitely many other inhabited planets, including not just one but in- finitely many tha…

So, I have been feeling like I'm being left behind as the internet changes. I mostly use a 2005 powerbook g4 running safari 3.03. I currently am the only one using my home wireless network, and my dl speed is 0.33 mbps. Now, I'm finding that many sites these days so heavily use complex formatting, and that a lot of things are simply unavailable to me and my computer. It is easy to simply go the university, use a nice new computer and use their 2 mbps internet. Fine. I think that it would make sense for most new sites to take a tip from gmail or watmm and offer simple html versions of their websites. discuss also: there are some websites that exemplify thei…

From the makers of QWOP comes GIRP Press and hold down the appropriate letter to make him grab and hold on to it, and press the shift (whilst still holding the key on the keyboard) to pull yourself up. Within about 10 seconds your fingers will be twisted in the most uncomfortable positions ! EDIT: DON'T USE THE SHIFT KEY, it's much harder than if you use the left mouse button instead. Plus you don't have to worry about stupid sticky keys kicking in if you use the mouse...

from letters of note... Writer Lafcadio Hearn was somewhat of a sensation in the early 1870s. Working for the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer, Hearn's graphic reports from crime scenes left very little to the imagination; his often surprising behaviour — "sticking his fingers into a dead man's brain (...) even drinking blood from abattoirs" — further strengthening his reputation as an eccentric, exciting journalist. Judging by the following shockingly vitriolic letter he wrote to Ellen Freeman — a wealthy older housewife who had unsuccessfully pursued him romantically for some time but with whom he politely corresponded for approximately a year — he also didn't hold back wh…
