Based on soundwave's suggestion i thought it would be nice to have a goto thread on watmm for all older synth music. Would be good if we could stick to pre ebm/synthpop/rave (as much as i like early depeche mode, wouldnt be appropriate in the thread) based stuff mostly predating 1983 otherwise its gets too open ended

so i'll start by listening some of my favorite artists and an album i recommend for each one.

giorgio_moroder-_einzelganger.jpg

Giorgio Moroder - Einzelganger 1975

an album giorgio made trying to pass himself off as a german electronic krautrock act. his most playful experimental electronic album similarities to Radioactivity era kraftwerk.

Jerry Goldsmith - Logan's Run OST 1976

Logan's run is one of the only 100% synth scores he's done. For that alone it's worth getting. He kept using synths on almost all of his movie scores in the 1980s i

he was doing stuff like this in the late 50s -

http://www.discretesynthesizers.com/nova/mp3/vbs2.mp3 combining synthesizers with real orchestra. pretty impressive considering the Doctor Who theme didn't come out until a couple years later than this Voyage of the Bottom of the Sea episode music

Morton Subotnick - A Sky Of Cloudless Sulphur / After The Butterfly 1980

'A Sky of Cloudless' is similar to his earlier works

one of the more unique synthesizer composers to come out of the 60s. His album Silver Apples of the Moon is where the psychedelic synth based rock band Silver Apples took its name.

Autechre seems to be inspired greatly by his first 2 lps.

Cluster - Zuckerzeit 1974

my favorite album of theirs mostly because of the awesome opening track 'Hollywood'

One of the guy's in cluster has done a lot of awesome collaborations too, namely Mobieus & Plank

Vangelis - Heaven and Hell 1975

He probably has better ablums as a whole but the opening track to this album has one of the catchiest synth hooks ive ever heard

Goblin - Zombi OST 1978

everybody here has probably already heard this, but basically the song La Caccia is my favorite song of all time.

other greats include Profondo Rosso, Patrick, Suspira

CD.jpg

Asmus Tietchens - Litia 1983

Zeebruge from this LP is an excellent track

the album Biotop is also very similar. Unfortunately most of his later stuff is not beat oriented like this.

ill leave the Tangerine Dream love to others, i know there is plenty of it here.

and one more for good measure, an album that is by an artist i normally don't like which happens to be very good.

Synergy - Audion

really digging this, i don't mind the new agey stuff as long as it sounds very synth heavy. Some of it is quite excellent, and i take back what i said in another thread i definitely think Oneohtrixpoint never is kind of homaging this era of new age music. not the mike oldfeld type of shit with tubular bells luckily.

I just recently got the first LP by Richard Burmer called 'Mosaic' it was a blind purchase but it is much better than i expected

Cheers for this thread. I heard Cecil Leuter's "Pop Electronique" for the first time a few days ago and had to listen to it another four times after that. This is the stuff I'm really neglecting.

Gilbert Trythall released a cold scholarly "sythlab" modular era work titled "Echospace" I like very much. Its asymmetrical tones but warm. All I could source online for an example is a later work, but interesting nonetheless as it avoids the typical hyperactive melody method of the time:

After hearing Plantasia one might explore this mellow collection of Nashville covers he produced.

And if one has become a Mort Garson fan after hearing Plantasia, I suggest "The Wozard of Iz" for one of my favorite pre-70's tracks "Upset Strip" where Garson creates drum breaks on a modular and what I believe to be fader cuts. Kraftwerk were amplifying rakes and banging on pots and pans then.

At the end on the 70's Michael Hoenig released "Departure from the Northern Wasteland" from which has a swell sequencer based track "Hanging Garden Transfer". The album consists of 2 large and 2 small tracks and might interest Tangerine Dream listeners.

I've been playing baldur's gate for fucking forever, and all this time I had no idea that Michael Hoenig, the composer for the games, did amazing electronic music.

i've been getting really into Sky records lately, they put out about half of Cluster's early albums, one Moebius & Eno collab and a crap load of other obscure stuff i never heard of until i looked at their page on discogs. They also put out most of Moebius' solo work /collaborative work and all of Rodelis's solo work (the guys from cluster)

like this guy Harald Grosskopf

or

Adelbert Von Deyen

Also just recently started listening to french electro band called Ptose from the late 70s/early 80s. Pretty amazing stuff. Some of it sounds like proto cylob

a06 - bonus-radial.mp3

b14 - la grande epreuve-radial.mp3

c23 - jai mal au coeur-radial.mp3

Somebody needs to make a torrent of all of this wonderful music or point me in the direction of a store where I can get it for a reasonable price please.

I consider these the best/these are the ones I find myself listening to most often. Some of these have been touched upon:

Klaus Schulze - Timewind; Moondawn; Mirage; X

Tangerine Dream - Rubycon; Phaedra

Ashra - New Age Of Earth; Blackouts (more guitar oriented)

Michael Hoenig - Departure From The Northern Wasteland

Harald Grosskopf - Synthesist

Edgar Froese - Aqua; Epsilon In Malaysian Pale

J.D. Emmanuel - Wizards

Kraftwerk - Computer World

Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4; Dream & Desire (released in 91, but was recorded in 77)

Cluster stuff:

Cluster - Sowiesoso; Zuckerzeit

Cluster & Eno - Cluster & Eno

Eno Moebius Roedelius - After The Heat

Eno Moebius Roedelius Plank - Begegnungen & Begegnungen II

Several releases in this thread that I haven't heard. I'm gonna have to dig in over the next few nights.

RuTracker can be quite good™. It'd be nice if there was somewhere that people could share high quality older and rarer records, for educational reasons. I have a few nice flac blogs in my rss reader, but something for/from folks here could be interesting.

i've not checked out any of these, the Rick Wakeman sounds especially interesting. I always get him confused with Synergy (larry fast) , who i think also did a lot of synth work in Yes
