I can live without the tits thread, but something you may want to consider jr - I continue to visit this place day after day because of the level of activity the forum has, not just the music related content. Day or night there is almost always something being posted, something to read, etc, even if its silly nonsense. I hope you'll limit your clean up to nudie threads and avoid castrating others...That is usually the first step to making a site you visit daily into one you visit once a week, and then once a month and so on as the 'useless' content is weeded out.

i feel kind of sorry for this tired, shitty genre of music.

Can you believe that I just connected the dots with your username and listened to "Quartet For The End Of The World"? It's fucking wild. I can't even use words for it...like the David Lynch of classical music. Anyway, I agree with the "tired" part, which is why I have been purposely taking in everything but the music discussed here lately.

I'm serious, you know how many torrent sites get busted every year? They go after forums, too.

c'mon, in that case, they would send you a cease and desist, and you would take down the image, or, if need be, the entire thread. But that doesn't seem to be what prompted the latest decision?

And you know for a fact that something like this (or a related incident) wasn't part of the impetus for this change?

You might have noted the question mark and the use of the word "seem" in my sentence. I'm open to being shown otherwise, but my reason for thinking it was not is that chaosmachine added this justification after several others had already been put forward. It did not seem like the front runner. And really, instead of countering with a question, you could just say "actually, we did receive such a threat" - end of story. That would instantly quash a lot of the dissent, mine included. A nice tits thread is not worth a credible legal threat to the site. I also think under that scenario you would have approached things differently, in a "hey guys, I know it sucks but due to a legal issue with copyright material I think it's best that we close the tits thread" etc

More than just that - if some of the revenue figures I've been suggested pan out, there's a hell of a lot more that we can do, like hire programmers to flesh out and finish the site (since I obviously don't have the time), etc. The possibilities are almost endless.

Hey, that sounds pretty exciting. On this basis alone, I feel like donating to the site. Once you have enough ad revenue to become less dependent on donations, will there be any other ways to support WATMM?

1.) Why not make it a feature when you donate that you can access the "Big Kid Section", or a locked thread that can only be accessed with a donation, where you can post and view all the cool big kid stuff while still maintaining a legit music forum.

2.) I know Joyrex is the ultimate decision maker for the website changes, but I think he should take into consideration of having a sort of WATMM council for outside opinion, or just make a locked poll that can only be viewed after so-and-so date. As the site continues to grow, I can only see it becoming more difficult for one single person to keep the peace in the interest of all members. Democracies are where its at amirite?

3.) Maybe even having a "Suggestion Section" subforum. (This is a pretty shit idea)

accepting donations for access is one of the things that got oink.cd sued.

we have this at several levels. even this thread...

i think id like it more without the drop shadow.

id like to see an official watmm logo so that there can be limited edition short run t-shirts all the time that have the logo small somewhere. then you could have all different shirts and when they are gone, a new art piece is selected. id like that craig anderson yoyo shirt first please.

Hey Joyrex, let me say something serious about this whole thing:

When I signed up (2008), it was for some specific file in the download section I found via google. I didn't plan on posting, ever. Eventually, I think months later, I started some threads in one or two of the featured artists sub forums, but was put off by a general mood of hostility, plus I didn't expect most of my posts to be met with ironic and joke responses and that was a little offputting as well - especially the BoC-gay-theme (which was way hotter at that time) and I simply didn't get the humor. So I thought "why does everybody hang out here when they hate the music?" - I did get some interesting facts and info from older threads in those sub forums though. I think I also looked into General Banter a few times, but it didn't interest me that much cause I had nothing to do with the members at that point.

After a little while, I didn't notice that hostility thing much anymore, partially cause I got used to the sharp humor and realized that people didn't actually hate the musicians they were joking about, and partially because, like I said before, it generally got a little friendlier around here imo and the dickishness towards new members (for which I am still kinda blaming theocide) was disappearing (except "Read the Rules!"). Most users today don't seem to mind directing even new member #412395 to Fredd E's BoC pages, which is friendly enough for me.

Nowadays, I'm jumping from music related threads to silly threads and back. I write joke-posts in both and I write serious posts in both. As you can tell by looking at my profile history, about half the threads I started were music related, and in the others I was just sharing something random that happened to me or somebody else. I'm still getting cool news from all sub-forums, about music or about films or maybe about tits once in a while. I could do without the "I just pooped" kinda threads that are pretty much designed to be moved to the crap archives, but I wouldn't want to take them away from the people who enjoy them. It's not like I HAVE to click them. I am getting much more out of the Strange Pictures Thread than I did from the Nice Tits one, but I'd HATE for those strange pictures to be censored in case the occasional one of Etches gif-unicorns happens to be flying out of a gaped asshole.

Now I would have suggested to keep (or build upon) the new rules for the music related subforums cause it does kinda make sense to me that a 14 year old who signed up to get some info on his fav band BoC for the essay he's writing for school shouldn't be greeted with an anal creampie explosion oozing from the 3rd post in his newly opened topic, while for us "older" members there could be a general guideline like "Try to lay off the porn in the serious music threads and if you feel you have to get it out of your system, go to GenBan"

I do however see the problem with the ads (you could have prevented the 20+ pages by mentioning that earlier on I think), but there's gotta be some kind of sponsor who allows ads on sites that ALSO have adult content. 98% of us are adults after all, and you could always put a 18+ thing in the Terms of Service to be safe in the legal department, right ... ?

Ive always been worried by ironic racism, as it opens the door to real racism

this is pretty much why i don't talk to my brother anymore

used to be the occasional joke

now he p. much just seems to hate black people

and yet, he listens to rap music.

idgi.

really? I was gonna say I disagree with joke racism opening the door for real racism ... I guess it depends. It can have quite the opposite effect, too. I always feel that making fun of racists merely by quoting them can show how idiotic some of the things they do are. But I guess I have witnessed "actually racist joke-racism" in school - some guys from my class used to say stuff like "I don't hate foreigners - as long as they stay in their own countries" and so on, and then they'd laugh vigorously and be like "kidding, guys, just kidding" - in those cases, I think it were people who have racists tendencies anyway but are too big a pussy to be straight out living it. So they stick to this lite-version of racism that won't get them into as much trouble. But I don't think someone would be "converted" to racism by joking around.

Which is why the story about your bro sounds odd. I mean, my friend who introduced me to all the amazing rap and hip hop stuff I never used to know or like is another German white guy and he keeps saying let's play some more nigger music etc, but obviously he's just taking the piss and imitating the stupid people who have prejudices against rap or black people.

I dont think its got to do with converting someone, I dont think the majority are that thick. But if someone makes a obviously racist joke, quite often someone will post something racist without humour, then when questioned on it thell say 'its just a joke mate, like the first poster did'. I used racist irony all the time, until an Indian friend of mine was telling me of the times she was made to feel small by people using the 'its just a joke' line. So I mostly stopped doing it.

perhaps joyrex could consider keeping threads in nonsense/crap forum open instead of closing them. that way it could become its own forum.

I used to read Totse and that's how they handled it. I don't know if that would cause any server/whatever problems, just a suggestion that has no effect on me either way.

No - this has been suggested many times before, and the main reason I DON'T do this is it creates a playground for idiots that frankly doesn't need to be here.

is this a real opinion, or an entrenched reaction? seriously. i am certain i've pestered you about this before, as have others, and the answer was always NO GODDAMN IT NO. as if saying yes would be backing down.

really, the fundamental schism seems to be on what a crap thread is. it would seem you believe that HOLY LOL SNAKE DIARRHEA was funnier than Gravy Armpits. i strongly disagree! start a poll and ask the masses; i feel gravy armpits will win. before you bin threads you regard as "stupid," i'd ask you to refrain from posting stupid threads yourself.

why would letting people post in N/C be so bad? show the threads you're not fond of to a back room and let them deflate calmly. closing a thread almost always pisses SOMEONE off -- hey that was a fun thread, i was just about to post there, etc. -- and the energy the thread had turns to grouchiness and vitriol. then the crabby people gang up on a n00b, or start some shit.

there are halfway solutions -- some sort of voting system to let members decide which threads are crap -- but opening N/C really is simplest. have a shot of whiskey tonight and seriously consider it. please.
