"The BBC's Radiophonic Workshop, which created theme tunes and sound effects for programmes including Doctor Who and Blake's 7, is to reopen after 14 years.Composer Matthew Herbert, known for his use of "found sounds", has been appointed creative director."

" Matthew Herbert will lead "seven fellow cutting-edge collaborators" in making new sounds and music. The composer is known for his experimental sound collages, which often have socio-political themes. On last year's One Pig film and album, he recorded the life of a pig from birth to its slaughter at 20 weeks, and its subsequent serving as a meal.In a live performance at 2004's London Jazz Festival, he drove a tank over a replica of a meal Nigella Lawson had cooked for Tony Blair and George Bush."

So this is why they closed the old BBC building with all it's memories and tradition, to re-open the radiophonic workshop.

drlol.

+ isn't that place about creating sounds, not borrowing them (re: M. herbert.)

Anyone who happens to be in London on September 29th should go to this at the science museum

There are a whole bunch of electronic music talks going on throughout the day, this one also sounds interesting:-

I shall be there, then off to the Planet Mu event in the evening for a knee's up :w00t:

I've noticed that Matthew Herbert doesn't seem to age, but he's becoming increasingly British-looking. On that superficial note, I suppose he's a fitting choice.

IS this the appropriate thread for this?

"How Daphne Oram’s radical turntable experiments were brought to life after 70 years"

http://www.factmag.com/2016/07/13/daphne-oram-still-point-turntables-orchestra-performance/

at 33 mins in, it seems to be a combination of live orchestra and turntables playing recorded orchestra parts?

Anyway it sounds fantastic

yeah was listening to this earlier. amazingly prescient work. so now we tear up the official history books. Turntablism wasn't invented by kool Herc..or christian marclay..or even Pierre Schaeffer or john Cage. It woz our Daphne.

Since we have an old thread, decided to put this here, and any new Radiophonic news going forward. Newly re-constructed track "Future Ghosts" from lost tapes discovered after Delia's death.

As there have been numerous vinyl releases of Doctor Who soundtracks by the Workshop, this is one I had to get, The Daleks.  Aired just before Christmas 1963, this is classic era RW at their finest, including the original and much rawer sounding Doctor Who theme.  Really nice gatefold vinyl set of classic British electronic music.

That's the beast that is the EMS Synthi 100 aka The Digitana (that latter name should hopefully mean something to you Rubin!)

This was an enjoyable (couldnt think of a better word) film - and the soundtrack works well imo.
