Pop country

There has never been a genre of music that has made me cringe as much as pop country. Having recently moved to the south, I hear this shit everywhere.

Having said that, I have a morbid fascination with the genre. Kind of like when you get a sore on your tongue and can't stop stabbing it with your tooth.

Let us now journey into the depths of this music. I shall begin the tongue stabbing:

it's so painful.. it's awful.. it's the worst thing ever..  they all sing the same song.

years ago i talked to an engineer who said in the 90s they sent around dat tapes to each other and shared all the same drum sounds for every album.. so, they'd replace the drum kits w/samples or whatever and all use the same sounds.

CMT country is a weird, weird beast. People listen to it thinking they relate to it more than hip-hop or rock or dance music but it's a money maker for the same people. It's Top 40 with superficial country twang and steel guitar and mandatory shout outs to trucks, small towns, light beer, and shitty relationships. Country used to be it's own bubble (like R&B/Soul) with Nashville as the industry epicenter but like all other pop music genres it's just another major label style.

It sounds trite but real country music / Americana / folk is alive and well, in fact it parallels indie rock at this point:

I actually shamelessly enjoy the toungue stabbing pain with this one.. If lou reed had a bromance with chris isaak and decided to go country after a discussion at the local small town Crackerbarrel...

is the new hickster genre weve all been waiting for?

heard this guy was at the Charlottesville demo...on the good side of course.

I’m just a country girl lookin’ for my cowboy. Work hard, play harder. Drama free. If you can’t handle a strong, independent woman, swipe left.

the one english news channel my hotel gets is fox news, and every 20 minutes or so they have to take a break for some white millennial fluffy looking pop country act. it's always 2 guys and one girl, like they're trying to suggest something...

I hear you, but I’m from Massachusetts(practically Europe) so I don’t like being blamed for what people in Alabama do. This stuff bothers me.

Sam Hunt is a country pop hero... A real human being... The last true gentleman.

I think we should start a movement of pop country appreciation amongst idm / hipster electronic music fans. In fact, maybe as far as true fandom, and beyond irony. We could totally find the underdogs or smaller buzzing artists within the genre and romaticize their not quite yet famous status and their authentic raw twang.
