Anyone got an Doepfer A-124 Wasp filter? Those things die all the time. I think its distinctive sound comes from those shitty circuits. Makes me wonder if this will suffer the same fate.

Is that Wasp Deluxe an officially licensed reissue? Sure looks like it.

Also looks like they implemented the enhanced waveform addon and the notch mode for the filter, which was a Jasper feature not on any original Wasp AFAIK.

EDIT: also has the Jasper-specific VCA hold switch, in the exact same position.  This looks more like a Jasper clone than an actual Wasp Deluxe clone.

A lot of it is the digital oscillators, too. I can't remember if the Wasp was the first mass market hybrid synth but it was almost certainly the first one that wasn't painfully expensive.

I've had mine for 6 years and it's been fine.  It's just one of the ic chips that blows, it's socketed so easy enough to replace.  I suspect the behringer will be smt which will make it more difficult.

none of the clones that behringer are doing are officially licensed afaik.  pretty sure they're just remaking all these old synths w/a few new modern features and of course rock bottom prices..

there will be many affordable decent sounding synths out in the world for people to do stuff with.

i was told the little mnimoog clone sounds good.

Like @kakapo says above, it’s perfectly possible to keep one in working order.

The problem is the chip. It was never meant to be used as a filter but the designer of the Wasp used it anyway because it’s a lot cheaper than a “proper” filter chip.

The chip should be socketed so you can easily replace it.

Normally either a chip will work, in which case it’ll work for years, or it won’t, in which case it blows within a few days / weeks / months

A new one should cost about 50 cents to a Euro or so. Don’t get a whole bag of them, though, as if you buy them at the same place and at the same tine they’re likely to be from the same batch and will therefore have the same tolerances. Good if the chip works (but then you won’t need a bag full of them), bad if it does not.

More on topic: this problem will affect the Behringer box as well - so unless it comes with a special chip compartment and a bag of replacements, I wouldn’t buy it.

This one just replicates the graphics so exactly that it made me wonder. I guess the wasp graphic is public domain.

If it's copying the design and not giving anything back to the original creators, the Behringer clone should go fuck off to the dumpster where it belongs.

It's one thing if a small boutique shop makes a DIY clone of some Moog that is otherwise lots €€€, but Behringer is a huge company that just decided to take other companies R&D, copy that and push out their own cheap thing.

Maybe I am being unfair here, but then I don't see any announcement of a licensing deal.

^ I suspect Behringer is going for the "We're a really big company with lots of lawyers - don't like what we do? How about you try to sue us?" tactic.

There's probably a line item on the Behringer Wasp budget for "spend this money for positive PR campaign if someone discovers shit". I mean if nobody really cares, they're good. If someone cares and makes a stink and it actually turns out that the design and circuits are patented or something AND the original owners still care enough...

Went down a wiki rabbit hole for a second, and it seems that Chris Huggett from EDP who made the original wasp, is now working at Novation. Does this mean Novation and Behringer could have at it if the original designs were really patented somehow? Interesting.. ?

I suspect Behringer vs Novation isn't a fair fight either.

From the looks of it, the only ones they're worried about are those with Roland and Korg - there they seem to have gone (a little bit) out of their way to make the ripoffs not quite as obvious. It seems like they fully trust their lawyers to make short work of Sequential, Moog and now Wasp.

Dunno, the Behringer TD-3 looks insanely similar to Roland's original.

I wouldn’t put it past a lawyer to argue the second is clearly different than the first, or at most somewhat inspired by it.

(Of course we’ve already established in another thread that the sound is in fact not all that close, which also helps)

For me visually if you took off or swapped the maker logos, I probably could not tell the difference out of the blue. They even copied "Computer Controlled" which makes 0 sense nowadays since everything has a computer in it anyway.

If this stands in any court as not being a clear derivative, then I don't know. ?

Polyphony suggests 4 fully articulated voices i.e. 4 osc, 4 filters, 4 vcas.

This is 4 osc, 1 filter, 1 vca.

This isn't polyphonic by any conventional understanding of what that terms means.

Para D was probably a little too on the nose?
