So which watmmer's still dislike TCH?

I bet they spent a lot of time chipping away at it and refining it, which makes it sound unfinished to a lot of people.

 

can you give me an example of someone else (or something else) that's been chipped away so much it ends up sounding unfinished as opposed to something that's been chipped away and just ends up sounding too edited and worked on?

I was still a little underwhelmed until last month I put it on just before sunset while making a road trip back out to South Dakota. As the sunset while driving through the rural areas watching the silhouettes of the wind generators and the album progressed it all really fell together. This was about my 5th time listening all the way through. I wouldn't declare it an instant classic, it's not on the level of MHTRTC or Geogaddi, but it's a good album. Another thing to keep in mind is that this album does have more of a focused mood than other works, and that mood is definitely more somber than even Geogaddi. It's also more of a concept album than previous works. I don't love it as much as some of their other works and it's probably not my AOTY but I do think it's a good album that does warrant repeated listens.

will check it out.

 

usually when i think something's been chipped away a lot, i usually think it sounds too cerebral. like autecture or lexaunculpt where, as soon as you put on the music, you can already tell it requires a more studious examination because of the intricate textures and work that's obviously been labored over with a clinical ear.

went to a really high end japanese restaurant in berkeley, ca tonight just for drinks and right when i sat down they started playing Tomorrow's Harvest over the speakers, stayed till about halfway into the album.

actually, i don't take it seriously. i just find it sloppy like the music. real mysteries are interesting because they have a kind of absurdity that gives them a life of their own. this is just two guys not telling you anything- just enough to keep you guessing though. a

 

also, when i discovered this band, i completely ignored the whole myth about them (for whatever reason, it just didn't interest me) and just listened to the music. my initial thoughts were "yes. good music. but not great. what am i missing?"

 

when i started to put the whole myth (red-moon gatherings, hexagon sun mystery members, talking about cults etc.) i found it kind of interesting - or rather, i actually wanted to listen to it more to try and put it in context with the story. somewhere around trans-whatever highway, i lost interest. it seemed as though, after ditching the backstory, the music itself was... forgettable. so we're back to the story- and since the marketing campaign website, video and 12 second vinyl weren't enough, they're also harping a few limited interviews carefully revealing just enough details to keep you hooked.

 

As artistic efforts go, I don't think there's a band quite like BoC that does what they do, but it's more art than some strange puzzle that needs to be solved (for me at least). The absurdity that gives things a life of their own as you mentioned is totally present in most of their work, this combined with the melancholic feel of the old vintage sound creates a very addictive atmosphere, and the more you listen to them the more you start to wonder about certain details and what they mean. But as much as I enjoyed seeing a band set up a really exciting campaign (that would lead only to the TH pre-order page, so that was marketing and nothing more) the insane buzz kinda killed it for me. It took me a couple of weeks till everything calmed down and I was able to clear my head from all distracting context that was pushed around the time of the relase that I could finally sit down and have a good time with my favorite band. As much as I enjoy reading sites likes bocpages or boc dedicated forums for the documentation of this bands talent for detail, for me personally they're best to listen to without any context at all, the magic is all between ones own ears imho.

 

Agree completely, like i said earlier it must be tricky now for them to deal with an explosion of a much wider fan base, which i only just realised with all the hype, articles, advertising posters on the street etc about TH,and trying to live some what distanced from it all. But like with all artist's its's next to impossible to stay hidden forever.

 

 

i think it's really good they still don't do anything live although it would most likely be amazing but could also be just one long nostalgia trip in a awkward commercialised venture/setting, unless they limited the event to 50- 200 people or something (like they did with playing TH in the desert) or their sets b4 they stopped playin live, and doesn't really seem fittin 4 them especially if they still dont feel comfortable with it.

I'm laying off this album for a few weeks. Seeing as it's probably a 9/10 right now I fully expect my next play sometime in September to hit a fucking 10.

 

I'm letting TH simmer in the juices in my subconcious brain. Then apply the ripcord in september.

Yes I'm really enjoying it as well but worried that I might be overplaying it - it's being played at least twice almost every day. Might give it a bit of a break. Still surprising to see so many dislikes for the album.

Maybe you don't like TH because it's so fun not to like it?

Just found it noteworthy that one can be passionate enough about disliking a band like BoC enough to write a medium-sized college essay about it.

 

Though yeah, it's probably not too frequent TH-lovers would just let them say what they want without criticizing it.

 

However, it doesn't mean anything if there's no example of a person "admitting that person might have a point". That's not how having opinions works. The fact that one side rarely concedes points does not make their position less valid. It's not like being right is a currency where you can make investments here and there by admitting you're wrong in exchange for returns of validity later on.

Passionate enough about disliking a band? How about passionate enough about liking music and writing their likes and dislikes? And if someone doesn't like what you like, he or she is not allowed to write a medium sized college essay about it? Who is forcing you to read it, btw?

 

"The fact that one side rarely concedes points does not make their position less valid." Perhaps. Although I don't like this generalisation. What matters though is the acceptance of different opinions. If "one side" rarely accepts an opposing opinion it kinda does invalidate their position.

 

edit: and why should i go to twoism to check your opinion? You're contributing to this thread, right? If you aren't here to contribute your opinion, than what are you doing here?

O, I'm just interested in hearing his opinion.

 

My opinion, btw: i think it's odd for people coming here telling other people to stop writing "medium sized college essays" without having something to add to this place for themselves. "Hi, I'm a passing consumer and I don't like your products!" "Bye!"

Third listen, I still don't have much of an opinion but it definitely stands up to their other works, still slightly disappointed as I wanted them to reinvent themselves somewhat.

I still need to grow into this album, I prefer the second half at the moment.

One does not simply dislike The Band.

 

its not dislike of the band for me, its the dislike of the work in question. I just don't like it. I can go into specifics if needed, but IMHO it's their weakest album....well maybe better than TCH...which I disliked as well.
