To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pitythem.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

Lock it up! Idc

ok! sorry but i cant pass this!

this is classic watmm human!

once when we reach to the point when we might be onto something more objective than our own babblings we ask to lock a thread, and non but the op himself. im just trying to incorporate science in this shit; do we have anything more objective than science?

i mean, what answer would you like to hear? tell me and im gonna repeate it to you, bolded

i think that your inital question was a valid question and you've chickened out when discussion started to remotely sound politically incorrect. maybe you didnt know but real science and philosophy can't be politically incorrect, thatz one of the reasones we like them.

also, taste as a phenomen is very interestiing one, not just for listeners but most importantly for creatives; iirc we are the music makers and why wouldn't we discuss such an important topic?

still friends? ;)

Of course we are still digital friends!

I am all about continuing the discussion, wouldn't have started the thread otherwise. But if people want it locked I'm not gonna raise a fuss over it. I think my initial post was taken the wrong way by some (though granted, I was drunk and not doing words well).

I wasn't responding to you personally when I mentioned closing the thread, more to the general nasty vibe that it seemed to evoke. I am not very pc, and non-pc talk don't scare me :)

I just can relate to cold, austere and abstract things better than touchy-feely stuff.

Have you always been that way, or do you think that your experiences growing up to a large extent formed your taste in abstract things?

Do you think your IQ has anything to do with it?

Was there a lack, or overabundance of, affection growing up that you think might have contributed to your tastes?

This shit is super interesting to me, so sorry if it seems invasive. Feel free to not answer anything I ask.

I became disenchanted with music recorded in the studio while studying audio production at a university. The sound of traditional instruments and synths is so overdone these days, how many strums and bleeps can we really put into arrangements before it all sounds the same? And why be limited to traditional arrangements anyway? These days I find myself more interested in music found outside of the studio. How many people even realize the harmonies and melodies of Vegas casino floors, the natural rhythms of Asian train stations, the drones and hums of Polish power plants?... There's so much music happening around us the average listener doesn't even begin to comprehend... Have you ever heard the atonal chords and polyrhythms of sleep waves? That's natural music!

You're a night auditor in a hotel reaching out for common ground with some autists online. Try not to think this deeply again, it's boring as fuck. You lived, you audited, then in 2047 you died in an accident. All that was left was your edgy avatar and some daffodils on your gravestone left by Bulk Vanderhooj

Let's argue about the IQ test now.

i agree that besides iq other features matter too but it's very hard to measure them. iq tests are not perfect but they have great statistical validity in many things related to life and an argument that they don't have validity of 100% is not a valid argument. imo

There we go, some good food for thought. Are most electronic artists autists?

Yeah, I guess I've always been in interested in science and abstract things like mathematics and languages. Those were the subjects I did best ever since I got into school. I have a master's degree in applied mathematics, an unfinished degree in theoretical mathematics and an unfinished PhD in intelligent systems if that tells something how I've spent my time.. but I mostly do programming for living.

Also I've never really liked acoustic music or even regular rock music except for some weirder forms of jazz, prog rock and dub.

I haven't had my IQ measured, so I don't know what it is.

I grew up in an environment that didn't really encourage showing your feelings, as that was considered a sort of weakness or girly thing, but I think I was more sensitive than the others.

Anyway, I have a bit of synesthesia which allows me to enjoy abstract things more than people usually do, I think. And maybe I can get into abstract systems and see them as structures a little better than the average person.

Interesting, most programmers I know that are younger than 45 are into electronic music almost exclusively. Maybe the structure and rigidity that is so ubiquitous in it correlates with programmers' taste in mathematics and precise formulaic conclusions etc. Jazz is similar but different, lots of freedom and "wrong" notes depending on waht you are listening to, but still generally working within a system. Are you into things like drone, noise, or black metal?

This is fascinating to me because I am quite the opposite when it comes to math and a lot of science. Terrible at it. That might have correlation with why I don't like most electronic music, but obsess over some of it.

Drone and minimalist ambient, things like that yes. Some noise occasionally. Drone metal also but not really black metal.

I've just written a 1000 word post on this but because I've drank 2 bottles of red, I'm wisely gonna keep it until tomorrow and probably not post it.

If we were having this chat, late at night and those thoughts would just drift into the ether I'd give it to ya. Scrawled across everyones computer screen in the cold light of day (including mine in the morning) is not a good idea.

Peace!

I once had a friend who was such an artist and like, creates art and stuff. I put on The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady by Mingus and it made him so uncomfortable. He also didn't understand why Mingus is a genius because there are several other people in his band playing and improvising, rather than Mingus sitting in front of a modular synth and making it all himself. Stuff like this and everyone raving about Tomorrow's Harvest is why I hate IDM now. I should have been listening to metal this whole time.
