Cryptowen
I've been reading The Political & Man by Panagiotis Kondylis, an English translation of an unfinished German text written by a Greek man, which thus far has focused largely on social modelling & systems theory every sentence feels like a frame from star wars the phantom menace

Overall quite enjoyed it, particularly the way he dismantles popular forms of political idealism just by pointing out basic logical contradictions in their models...I do feel like I'm going to have to read some more contemporary analysises of his work, however, because I'm not sure his notion that Western Capitalism ultimately trends towards bureaucratization, class leveling, and formal adoption of socialism holds up. I mean obviously socialist concepts seem to have really started to catch the public imagination on the right & the left in the last decade, but this seems less like societal evolution & more like the old model of society feeling increasingly unworkable for most. Also I dunno if the reality of ultrawealthy tech overlords, the idea of neofeudalism, and corporations increasingly weighing in on political issues really fits in with the idea of management becoming more diffuse & less motivated to maintain individual power in society. Cryptowen
Quote If in a society a theocentric ideology predominates, then this does not mean that God Himself reigns here, but that humans, who legitimise their deeds by invoking God, prevail; anthropocentrism, for its part, does not take the place of theocentrism because humans now for the first time commandingly walk onto the stage of history (on that stage stand always only humans and nothing else), but because certain humans, by invoking “man”, drive out those who until then laid claim to God; and the decline of anthropocentrism does not mean that there are no humans anymore, but that the world-theoretical stance of those humans who act decisively in the ideological field, is no longer anthropocentric, that, therefore, the champions of anthropocentrism have lost the decisive battle. Scientific anthropology draws its legitimacy from the ascertainment that irrespective of the dominant perceptions on man’s position in the cosmos and on anthropology’s theoretical usefulness, the constitution and the behaviour of the creators and representatives of all these different perceptions exhibit certain uniformities, that, therefore, the forms of the said creators’ thought and action diverge from one another far less than the content and the concrete practical aims. That is why it does not constitute a paradox if one considers social theories to be symptomatic stances of humans in a concrete situation in the history of ideas, whose ideological character manifests itself in the performative contradiction of summoning, for the putting aside of anthropology, forms of action which in other situations are able to serve even opposing aims. Kondylis is really interesting but also makes me wish I knew how to read German

TubularCorporation
I got a small pile of Applewood facsimile edition Nancy Drew books free from work recently and I've been having a great time reading them, I'd buy the full set but most of the facsimile editions are in the $50-$200 range depending on condition, unfortunately. I've already got the titles that stayed in print longer and go for $3 or less on order.

Cryptowen
current reading: the question concerning technology in china - I wanna see more stuff like this, that explores the idea of an anti-globalist form of multiculturalism. like basically the author (who is Chinese but very well versed in western philosophy) is demonstrating how different cultures see the world in fundamentally different ways, and that it wouldn't really be in anyone's interest (or at least not in most peoples' imo) to attempt to replace that with one generic world monoculture. And yet at the same time we've developed to the point now where multiple cultures are inevitably going to have global concerns, and there needs to be some way to deal with that god & the state - (just finished) it's interesting how even though this is a classic anti-religious text, Bakunin spends a great deal of time attacking one of the sacred cows of contemporary atheism: the belief that a society run by scientists would somehow be immune to the problems he highlights in societies run by priests. he basically argues that an intellectual oligarchy would emerge that would do their best to keep the deep mechanisms of science/industry/politics as occluded as possible to the masses in order to ensure their continued position of authority; that even if you champion the merits of science itself (which Bakunin does) it still inevitably gets interpreted by individual actors who are prone to corruption just like anyone else. Overall good book. sometimes when he gets polemical it's kinda like Marx, 50% funny 50% annoying phenomenology of perception - just started, new to Merleau-Ponty. Can already tell this one is gonna be a task to get through. he's constantly going "hey you know this aspect of sensual experience that's very difficult to articulate in language? Welll...*proceeds to describe it in detail for several pages*...Now he're why that way of describing it is actually completely wrong" revelation space - mostly just read this one because i found a free copy & thought it would be a nice change of pace. It was...alright? I dunno, I didn't feel like it left me with a lot to think about. It just felt like binge watching a netflix series, basically. i'm sure if you're into this kinda thing it's pretty good. i will give the guy props for painting a fairly realistic-feeling portrait of humanity as a space-faring race five centuries from now. Probably if it was more artfully written I would have enjoyed it more the political & man - still. this shit's like 900 pages. if you want an idea of what reading this book feels like just take a look at the only known photo of the man who wrote it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panagiotis_Kondylis Edited May 22, 2021 by Cryptowen

I feel like everyone read this ten years ago except me BUT I’m finally getting on it and it’s great. Kind of the perfect book for someone who can’t tell if they prefer fiction or non-fiction. I can see why DiCaprio snatched up the rights to develop this… which I believe is finally getting made as a series. It reads like a new season of True Detective set in the 1890s.
