It's mostly context, sound/machine manipulation, and most of all the imaginivity, imo. If he doesn't understand the context, he won't be able to appreciate Rdj's music from a pure theoretical perspective. Which is in itself a pretty warped way to appreciate music, btw. Ae does more of the crazy experimental stuff, Aphex is just good, simple music (with the exception of some of the drill n bass stuff, but even that is in standard time signatures, and not that many tracks are crazy like that). A couple of generation gaps maybe, but some of the academic electro acoustic guys I've met think music made for 2 speakers is by definition uninspiring.
