You are right but I just want to point out that this always gets said at every USA election. Like this time round its particularly true but this argument always comes up. re: democracy: The rich and powerful have always been in control of the world, if you think back to ancient times of kings and emperors. Modern things we are used to, like democracy and the rule of law (the idea that laws apply to everyone not just peasants) were hard won and the kings and emporors only gave into them very grudgeingly or after many battles. And democracy and rule of law are constantly under attack from the rich and powerful - they can game the system in many ways, buy people off, influence legislation, gerrymander, control the press etc. If they find themselves caught out on the wrong end of the law, they can hire the best lawyers, lean on polticians or judges to save their arses etc. And so my point is when you see how messed up things are, its not like the rich and powerful have only just started fucking with things, they've been there the whole time and the progress we have made only happened because they got occasionally outmaneuvered.
