Autechre - Oversteps (WARP210) [The MegaThread]

r ess is quickly becoming one of my favs. As always it's a brilliant opener, the beat is so subtle but at the same time so present. The last little melody in Treale really gets me going as well. Sooo good. Qplay is beginning to grow on me as well but I reckon it'll take a bunch of listens to fully wrap my head around this one.

I love d-sho qub too, but I can't listen when I'm really baked cus it does my head in. I'm still working into this one to an extent, this is all so excellent.

I think the best thing about this album is that it's pretty easy going, but not shy on complexity. The melodies on this album are certainly their most complex and layered, and the atmosphere is so unique. Gotta say that first listen for this album was a bit meh for me but its growing on me quickly. My opinion may not matter cus I'm a big fanboy but I can honestly say that I would never lie about liking a track if I truly did not. There are some I don't particularly enjoy but everything is a nice interesting journey nonetheless.

os veix3 is like the next level of VL AL5 and Uviol

totally agree... r ess has quickly climbed to the top for me, even over ilanders. On first listen I thought the album sounded way different for ae, but with each listen it sounds more and more like them. At this point, I've gotten rid of all doubt about this being real or not. I just wish I had a proper copy without the fades between tracks...

I think it will be really interesting to see what the live stuff is like or if we get multiple versions a la quaristice (though i doubt that since the improv/make your own playlist theories seems so accurate and i can't see them doing that again) But the generative stuff they used could make some crazy live variations of the album...I'd be really excited to see these sort of loose and open song structures varied and see all the stuff continue to shift.

Has anyone recognized bits in past live recordings? I haven't found any.

After more listens I really love how open this album is, its like ae on sedatives and i understand why so many people who be displeased by that lol.

awepittance, is your untilted fAEk still available anywhere? I think i remember you saying one track was on your tijuana album but i can't remember which track. I've been listening to your stuff for my crazed rhythms fix so this album wasn't much a of a let down

edit: also, this album seems to get darker and darker for me each time i listen...at first it was like ae rainbows

meh, i'm fairly certain we're all listening to the same leak. it'll be impossible to match our track lengths to the times from "that guy's last.fm page", as our version is shortened by the crossfades.

Whoa... thats a big discrepancy. Its worth mentioning the tracks we're going off of could very well be solely perceptive or interpretive based on the slicing up the single track. That, and getting inspector gadget on some dudes last.fm scrobble doesnt seem that official either.

Most of those are close to the leak we have now... each track on his seems to be about 5-10 secs longer, which could make sense without the fades. The ilanders time agrees with this too if you chop off the 2nd play. The really weird part is his st epreo is way shorter and his Yuop is way longer... strange

Certain aspects of this album are startlingly ae-like, while not sounding like ae at all which is the strongest evidence that it's really them. Nobody can beat them to where they are at musically. Maybe in a different direction but Ae has this sort of magic almost. I'm not saying this is for sure real but I'll be god damned if it isn't.

To those who have it and haven't decided if it's ae i'll point to a few specific places.

the squelchy synth line in known(1) is just far too complex, random-sounding but ordered and meaningful, and slightly obscured so as to require several bars to put the full picture together. Sounds too well-structured in my opinion.

about 2:40-2:50 into pt2ph8 its just too rich and wonderful.... I dunno man, there's too much soul in that sound to be fake unless the person was totally soulless.

The melody that in Treale that starts at about 4:43, fucking brilliant, has that real ae vibe to it. This track is kinda like a re-shelled rale, which is funny because Treale

And I mean, os veix3, just the whole thing, so rich and layered.

And d-sho qub is like perlence having a bad acid trip. Dunno man, would be quite surprised to have this turn out as a fake.

Has anyone actually sat with a calculator and added up the differences between the (possibly) m4a sliced version vs the last.fm scrobble version?

And why is no one mentioning that Yuop cuts off at the end in both the m4a and its sliced version?

I'm not sold on this, the radio tracks are a cut above the rest for sure. Looking forward to hearing the proper album when my records arrive.

I would hesitate to say any of these times are "legit" though.

i could actually see ae making a fake leak version of the album, just to throw off eager pirating fans. and if so, well good job r&s, this will be fucking hilarious in a few weeks

Unless of course, the fake leak released by them is more well received than the actual release.
