Metal Appreciation Thread!

Okay, listen guys. I need a good metal album that is very technical and heavily composed with little to no vocals and with ripping lead guitar solos. Heavy but not washed out. Something for my brain. I want to get into metal but I'm really never in the mood for the dark thrashing screaming shit.

EDIT: let me expand on my request.. I've recently gotten very into king crimson which isn't exactly metal but I'm very into some of the riffier heavier moments they have. Such as:

and the guitar soloey part of frakctured(solo around 5:10):

According to a Facebook update by Steven Wilson, he and Mikael Åkerfeldt have just finished mixing a new Opeth record.

"(...) Firstly, we finished mixing the incredible new Opeth album a few days ago, keep an eye on their website for details on that. Mikael and I also took the opportunity while he was here to finish writing our collaboration album - there's still a lot of recording work to do, but this should definitely be out in early 2012."

Yes. Oh, yes.

textures are another great band. they build on meshuggah's style to include more melodic stuff:

when the keyboards come in, so gorgeous. really great to hear a technical metal band using ambience.

Thanks a lot for turning me on to this, fantastic musical ideas. It's rare that I hear new metal that leaves a big impression on me.

These guys never cease to amaze:

Cephalic Carnage is pushing extreme metal into some interesting directions. They're all over the map, always exciting:

Intronaut's crazy creative, I'm very curious to hear how they evolve:

And for some reason I'm only just now getting into Napalm Death. Inside Out Torn Apart is a fucking great album:

And for anyone who wants to be assailed relentlessly, Origin's last album Antithesis is just stupid. It's one of the few albums that has left me feeling beaten up after listening to it. I have a theory that if their drummer stopped machine gunning his kicks for more than 5 seconds the whole thing would collapse:

--they're not a personal favorite, but possibly the most extreme sounding metal band I've heard. That's got to be worth something.

Origin's second album "Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas" is their best by far, check that one out.

Also, these guys are even more extreme than Origin, and pretty damn great. Suffocation for the next generation:

My favorite metal bands:

immortal, tool, burzum, bathory, darkthrone, beherit, thorns, gorguts

I'm sure everyone's heard Tool, but I'd recommend Thorns, Gorguts and Burzum specifically to members here.

Light of the Northern Star? it's damn good. much less proggy than their older concept-ish albums...
