post your favorite albums so far of 2011

1. Matthewdavid - Outmind

This album is a mixture of heady blaze hip hop beats and Vangelis style LA fixation. There is a lot of 'tape' analogue sound going on, for the hell of it. This album is actually seriously excellent, I've been spinning it during evening drives when it seems to work best. In this summer heat, driving through the tree laden suburbs, it sounds really good.

2. Ssaliva - Thought Has Wings

This album was released on the aforementioned Matthewdavid's label, 'Leaving Records.' This album is one that for some reason has worked very well for me. The band name Ssaliva brings to mind the word... Salvia? The music sounds like that to me, like some far out hallucination of music songs. The pieces are all tape based it seems, based on repetitions of surrreal phrases and then building on those. It wouldn't be a personal favorite if it was just some experimental bullshit though - it's really just the way it comes back to get you, makes you want to hear it again that is it's highest value. Good music.

3. John Maus - We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves

This guy has become one of the major favorites in my mind. I thus far don't think this is quite the same level of innovation going on on his previous albums, but it is still fantastic. This album grows on you strongly, and maintains a distance in your mind between 'understood' and 'mysterious.' The usage of lo-fi here was done properly. An inspiration.

4. Panda Bear - Tomboy

At first I was massively disappointed in this album. Recently I found that it's actually a great, great album. I can see this growing in stature over the next few months on my list del alblimatione which is latin/greek for 'list.'

5. Bruno Pronsato - Lovers Do

The perfect minimal techno album, for me.

I'm way slack about following new album releases (especially seeing as I've still got a ton of stuff from the last century to catch up on), so the only new ones I've heard so far from this year came outta this forum. That said, there were some I enjoyed quite well...(off the top of my head)

Arbee - altérations

Cubus - that piano EP

Future Image - The Speed of Revolution

Venetian Snares - Cubist Reggae

Wahrk - Delve/Metamateria

Stuff that might/will probably show up on this list when it comes out...

Jandek - *album that just came out* (could go either way but the description sounds promising)

Ladytron - *new album*

Trent Reznor - Girl with the Dragon Tattoo soundtrack

Tonetta - 777 Vol.3

Tom Waits - *new album* (actually I imagine that won't be coming out until next year)

something else I'm totally not expecting (usually the case)

there's been a lot of good records this year

my most played are most probably grouper's aia, pj harvey, united waters and earth.

as for disappointments i'd go for mogwai, which apart from rano pano is a turd of an album, and radiohead's which i really liked initially but it got worse and worse with repeat listenings.

For the most part, I'm still a couple years behind. But I at least have one favorite for 2011:

And Chad Van Gaalen's new one has also been very much appreciated. It's basically his sonic youth album, and it has possibly the worst title I've ever heard:

Also, he signed the record store guy's penis with a swastika, which is pretty much the best course of action when confronted with a fan dick.

(And of course the new Radiohead)

Oh yeah, I don't know how I forgot about Amon Tobin's new one! You can tell he put everything he had into it.

I'm excited about the new Boris albums, just haven't gotten around to acquiring them yet.
