wait, this:

is what they're calling a "vicious tirade" against this feminist group?

lol

This pretty much tells you all that you need to know. He is perfectly within his rights to call out a group that has been actively trying to get all his shows cancelled and have him thrown out of the country. It's not like it's a long tirade either, he just calls them bitches and cunts. Which everybody on here, i'm pretty sure that they are. And this isn't a misogynist issue. It's a cunts being bitches issue.

thankyou, and you're welcome.

well-put!

Disclaimer: I don't think Tyler should be dropped from any label, kicked out Australia, sued or even (though I would appreciate it) issue some kind of sincere clarification (I highly doubt he'd even entertain an apology). This is one of those tests where many find themselves tempted to ponder censorship and legal action against people for words and words alone.

I find his rant and the crowd response disturbing. His history of misogyny and excessively violent lyrics, and likewise his trollish attitude, is truly tiresome for me, which is why I enjoy him and Odd Future's music but will likely never become a dedicated fan. That's saying a lot since I've been a huge fan of such hip-hop in the past - so much so my friends were often surprised I haven't ranted and raved about them. Well, I know why. They're assholes. They're annoying. It's utterly superficial and hyped music. They provoke and pull controversial shit all the time with absolutely no purpose - not even mere shock value or irony - and that's the turn-off. In fact the only thing they actively engage in is deflecting and dismissing criticism. Tyler in particular pisses people off for no fucking reason solely to publicly lash out at anyone who dares to call him out for being immature, obnoxious, and idiotic. And if he doesn't, the fans of Odd Future that notice you online will harass and ridicule you themselves. The fact that many are middle-class white kids with nothing better to do that engage in meta bullshit memes and write #SWAG all the fucking time is even more maddening.

It won't change anything, but ignoring Tyler, forgetting this incident, and finding better music to listen to is all I plan to do. This campaign was doomed from the start. The fact that a progressive writer from the Guardian being targeted is now being defended by a right-wing opportunist politician there is another red flag this wouldn't end well. Sadly, I actually think that hypothetically Tyler and the woman in the middle of this mess, Talithia Stone, could actually meet IRL an discuss this like civil people, but that's never going to happen. Most people will pick a side, re-tweet or re-post whatever they agree with for a few days, and then this will fizzle out. Worst case scenario he actually gets banned or sued, then this will only get uglier.

Earl Sweatshirt could be a very good artist one day.

why do you guys hate it when people have fun

I like when fun is positive and straightforward, not FUCKKILLSWAGBITCHESIRONY fun.

But that's really not my gripe. Lately I've been venting in rant-y posts when my main reaction is really 'meh.' I have no qualms with them or their music, but I find their mass appeal and fame perplexing when so much of their activities are knee-jerk and meaningless (that's the key word, MEANINGLESS) shock value.

I admit, I much rather listen to Odd Future or some preachy conscious rap or social activist oriented punk music. Hell, I listen to black metal bands that are far more notorious and ridiculous than Odd Future. And likewise, I find opinion pieces that simply bitch about offensive things instead of investigate them, like this one by Carrie Brownstien about BM doc Until the Light Takes Us very fucking annoying. It's not that I don't get it. When I saw the "Earl" video for the first time I was strangely entranced. It captured some of kind of pure, primal and absurd nihilism one has as a teenager. As a friend of mine said, it was oddly pornographic. It made sense. Maybe I'm over-analyzing some forced skateboarding accident footage, but whatever.

This isn't fun:

1:20 isn't fun:

I'll also add that I don't think Tyler nor Odd Future are untalented or uncreative, in fact I feel quite the opposite (too lazy to debate this, just my opinion.) I just find that their excessive antics conflict and interfere with this. It makes me apathetic to really get into their music.

I can't write such public antics off because...

This is fun:

This is fun:

So I'm divided on how to feel with them, but I must scoff when retorts to criticizing musicians like Odd Future or Tyler specifically are essentially "why you hatin' >: [" ' It's more complicated than that. Ultimately, this is about free speech and artistic freedom, and I can't help but side with Tyler because of that. I think a lot of people are likewise, trying to provoke Odd Future, or use them to get their own publicity and political gain, and that's why this is so fucked overall. The anger towards them culminating in legal threats is more ridiculous than they are.

Also, why not target Chris Brown? Is it simply because he's not touring Australia? Is it because his music is poppier and less offensive? Is it because he actually beats women instead of rapping about doing so? Is he a harder target because of the behemoth of the music industry behind him?

Also, for the record I do not like Eminem.

Also, more of then not, I rather listen to Dr. Octagonecologyst for the 150th time than listen to any O F W G K † Δ album.

Also, I need to sleep and I'll be offline until Tuesday. So have a good weekend.

sometimes assholes get famous. it is pretty irresponsible (and personally upsetting) of him to glorify and trivialize violence against women and misogyny (and arguably contribute to perpetuating them) but i think it says more about their target audience that has such a demand for this overdone crap.

Does Frank Ocean not technically count as being part of Odd Future (didn't he join really late?), because he's by far the most talented and thoughtful r'n'b artist I've heard since... Prince.

Yeah I guess I never really counted Frank Ocean (and yes he is very talented, I actually like his album a lot) I always saw him as associated by being signed to the label but not really a core part of the crew. He doesn't seem to get up on all the hip-hop #swag/golfwang antics as much. I'd almost say he's even smarter than the rest of the crew and used all the hype and dick-riding surrounding the crew to give his own success a little nudge and I don't fault him for that at all, it certainly worked.

he needs electroconvulsive therapy right away

i think that's giving him too much credit, it makes him seem almost insane which would imply that he has any creativity or passion. when in reality he's just a really boring fuck

Well to be fair, in popular culture and all over the internet he is recognized as The Guy Wh Hit Rihanna, he still gets a lot of shit for that and I don't see it stopping anytime soon. Some stores even refuse to sell his albums

I don't have much to say about Tyler that joshuatx and Ehrlichamn haven't said already. But this thread made me think about the only song that has ever really offended me, and that is Eminem's "Kim". There's a load of music out there about rape, violence, mysoginism and so on, but most of the time is just harmless fantasies. But Eminem's Kim is not like that; it's not an aimless rant, it's a clear case of psychological abuse aimed directly at the mother of his daughter. It's a personal and pretty disturbing attack that get people to cheer at live shows, and that for me is crossing the line. I think Eminem should have been dropped from the label for that song

Weird. I thought of Kim as well when reading this thread.

Don't know his/their music, but it seems like with this guy at least it's just an act, right? The lyrics as well as the rant, all part of the "performance". So this thing stinks of censorship.

Australia, a confounding place where ultra-conservative and feminist ideals align in the righteous name of villainizing and penalizing American rappers for their lyrics.

I reported you for this actually. Regardless of the content of the video this is a real immature move on your part delet. Have some dignity. Even if I agreed with you, your phrasing would make me ashamed to do so.

Edit: I like a good chunk of Eminem's music and I could never listen to Kim. Can't imagine how someone could perform that song live, if they really meant it. And yet, something I have always admired about him is his absence of shame, even where I would think he should feel it...

So the woman who was so scared of him managed to go to his concert and record him on her mobile phone?

Exactly.

Put herself in a position she wasn't comfortable in, then got called out and cried about it. Feminists are as bad as the radical muslim lot.....attention seeking little hussy should have gone to a spear's concert instead.

feminism is my favorite subject. i am an authority on feminism. that is why I can tell you taht in truth "feminism" as we know it is just the encounters between daddy-issue girls and average frustrated chumps that both want very much to fuck one another (actually they don't want to fuck one another, the guys want to fuck 10s regardless of their intelligence and the girls want to fuck men who aren't afraid to dominate and oppress people who conflict with their interests or just for the heck of it) but are confused and direct their anger at the other side. in truth their are angry at their own gender for failing and project this hate onto the other side. "YOU DON'T WANT TO FUCK ME BECAUSE I'M UGLY" --- "YOU DON'T WANT TO FUCK ME BECAUSE I AM NICE AND DON'T WANT TO DOMINATE PEOPLE IN THE NAME OF COMPLETELY UNETHICAL SELF INTEREST" (self-hatred biologically projected) true feminism takes place outside of these encounters and generalized groups (mental illness, sexual frustration, daddy issues, friendzone, ethical intelligence) and is very rarely discussed on youtube, message boards, and reddit. it sounds like the people boycotting this music have daddy issues and feel the need to make everyoen else miserable.
