What.cd shut down

I have to thank What.CD for the bitching about how 99% quality rips aren't good enough and for the hours spent grabbing all of the obscure classical music CDs at the library to keep my ratio at a safe level.

Seriously though, it's pretty sad to see it go. With the library nearly the size of the Seek and the rips cleaner then buying the CD or record itself, I'll miss it but just like the site it replaced it'll spring back up soon.

I still use soulseek for most stuff, there are plenty of autistic collectors yet to give up on it.

What are you dudes using these days besides what.cd?

Well shit. Any invites to other trackers?

surely it's possible to create a file sharing service without any centralised servers that could be easily shut down, or does all data between two computers always need to pass through a server?

You asked "all data ... always" which isn't probably true of -any- P2P service.

Now, is it possible to have a P2P service completely -without- a centralized server? Well, how would the client computers find each other?

You'd think something must have happened to raise their profile considering how long the site had been "allowed" to exist, wonder if it has anything to do with the relatively recent trend of hacking/exploiting digital download stores.

great news, hopefully people will migrate to soulseek/ruracker or other open platforms, the wcd ratio rules coupled with its seedbox proliferation among users became unbearable for people with slower connections.
