Now That Trump's President... (not any more!)

Well that's why the goal is to move the overton window. Make political discourse in general more conservative. What's one way to do this? Frame left wing as extremist PC culture.

I listened to a podcast by a former neo-nazi some time back, where he explains the new method is to be subtle. You know, Instead of becoming a skin-head, wear a suit and tie. Basically re-frame racism into something palpable for the masses instead of lynching or whatever.

I'm not pointing to one single trajectory or thing causing more conservatism, but a whole bundle of trajectories coming from different movements that are indeed pushing the window right.

Seeing youtube so dominated by right wing just worries me. btw sorry if there's any incoherence, I'm tired.

Where are you looking for your information? If you listen to podcasts like that, please don't be surprised you change your outlook on the world because of it. If you focus on the right, you see the right.

I haven't seen this domination on youtube, although I have seen some clips with a fair amount of right-wing activity. And I'm sure there's plenty of nonsense if you jump in that rabbit-hole. On the left, btw, you have an endless stream of white guys doing some form of TYT. Giving comments on how ridiculous FOX is. It's all equally insane, imo.

Don't jump into those social media rabbit holes if you want to keep sane. Choose your info. If you jump in, you'll only help making it bigger. You generate clicks and support it.

It's strange that you can get stuck in a loop of alt-right videos by clicking on the wrong video game video, but you never get caught in an extremist liberal loop.

This seems to be by design, not ideologically but in terms of tech: facebook, youtube, twitter, their goal is to increase 'user engagement' - which seems to mean they want to keep users inside the app for as long as possible so that data can be collected and ad views/revenue can be optimized. This incentivizes the wrong aspects of human social behavior and individual responses to stimuli (i.e. negative emotion gets rewarded): you are more likely to stay 'user engaged' if the content is inspiring resentment, fear, paranoia, outrage, etc. There were some studies which showed that if you clicked on a youtube video that featured reasonable conservative commentary, then autoplay would, about 15 videos later if untouched, be showing you the more extreme and exaggerated form of such commentary in order to keep you 'engaged.' So you select a David Brooks video and then 15 videos later you got some neo-nazi stuff, etc. https://www.tubefilter.com/2018/12/03/youtube-boost-video-engagement-home-autoplay/ looks like from this story that possible solutions are being examined by YouTube at least.

This is a serious problem, I would imagine, for young people who do not have access to proper education and do not know how to act as their own filters on the internet.

Months after watching one video of Jordan Petersen on CH4 news, youtube was still suggesting bullshit 'Ben Shapiro OWNS the libs' type videos. If you start clicking on those in turn who knows how far down the rabbit hole you can go.

Stay signed out of chrome whenever possible, helps minimize that kinda stuff

That's an interesting idea about keeping users engaged, but wouldn't videos of ultra liberalism also incite the same response from people on the right? Following your example, you should be able to watch one video on Robert Sapolsky and eventually end up at videos supporting socialism/communism. In my experience, you have to manually dig deeper in order to see those things.

welcome to algorithmic world. if you know/understand the algorithm, you could game it and influence what others get recommended. do it massively and you can change society.

thanks putin!

I've had similar issues with PragerU, CRTV, and Donald Trump ads popping up. But in the last couple of weeks I've found myself watching fewer videos in general. Political fatigue has taken its toll, but at the same time I need to stay informed on current events at the very least. At this point I care less about what people think, and more about what people know.

reddit's left/right bias depends entirely on which subreddits you are in.  other social media like 4chan is almost entirely extremist right wing.  if you go through more obscure left-leaning videos on youtube the comments also mostly lean left, but the exceptions are when a video became popular on other right-leaning websites in which case the comments are completely brigaded by racist poltards

It's donnie v. Beto out in west Texas tonight:

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/trump-beto-o-rourke-el-paso-texas-wall-n970256

"We have a line that is very long already, I'm mean you see what's going on," Trump told reporters in Washington before departing for Texas, referring to people waiting to get into his "Make America Great Again" campaign rally. "And I understand our competitor's got a line too, but it's a tiny little line. Of course (the media) make it sound like they have more people than we do. That's not going to happen.”

You hear that all you left wing pinkos!!!! YOU'VE GOT A TINY LITTLE LINE

Trump's audience inside the coliseum was 6,500, at capacity, El Paso Fire Department public information officer Enrique Aguilar told the El Paso Times. "It might be 10,000 with the people outside," watching on monitors. The rally O'Rourke spoke at, following a mile-long march, drew at least 7,000 people, The Texas Tribunereports. Bloomberg's Jennifer Epstein says that's an undercount:

El Paso police estimate a crowd of 10,000 to 15,000 for the anti-Trump, anti-wall, pro-O’Rourke march and rally tonight.
