The Third Man - 10/10 - Rewatched this on blu ray... definitely on my top 10 film list. Everything is perfect in this film... every bit of it is meticulously planned and executed.

I have a question for the Tarkovsky fans in the audience: a theater across town is playing The Sacrifice. Is it worth taking a trip across town and paying current theater prices to see?

I would give many fine things to see a Tarkovsky film on the big screen.

i've seen no Rambo movies, should i keep it this way? i've been curious to check out First Blood recently after learning what the plot was

i just realized i've seen the newest one with the extremely over the top hong kong-esque gore , it was just ok. i have a feeling First Blood will be much better. I was always under the ( i guess false) impression Rambo movies were Top Gunish and that they promote the action of the US military, but reading more about the first one it sounds more like Deerhunter, which is kind of wtf

Inglourious Basterds: 6.7/10

 

I just saw this one too, I agree, about 7/10. Problem is I read too much about it so I knew the beginning and ending. I have to say I have a real soft spot for Tarantino when he brings his "A" game. He understands how to build suspense from dialogue, and he loves upsetting audience expectations, two things I adore. However, the film wasn't quite up to Pulp Fiction standards - felt like it needed a few more scenes in the middle to really make it more epic - and I didn't like Pitt's character. I also wasn't emotionally engaged in the "Jewish revenge" elements of the story, so the ending fell really flat to me. It also seemed completely crazy that

someone as intelligent as Hans Landa would put so much faith in striking a deal with SAS without some form of insurance...what reason did he have to believe that they wouldn't just kill him after he helped them off hitler? Weak logic

In any case, opening sequence and the bar sequence were superb. The acting across the board was great. Rest of the film was so-so. Oh, and Tarantino needed to drop the voice over and name cards, they seemed really out of place and weren't helpful or funny.

this was a lot more fun and, somehow, a lot more true to the spirit of the show than any of the star trek movies. it made me wish they'd make a trek with the old cast essentially playing themselves in this exact scenario.

I don't know, Basterds was pretty brilliant in my opinion. Something about the dialogue and acting came off as very honest, even though the plot was totally fictional. Sure it had charm and Tarantino's traditional style, but his perspective on the soldiers of both the allies and nazi's seemed far more honest then what you see in most movies. His decision to make Landa charming and polite was absolutely genius.

I had heard lots of shit about this movie like people complaining about the length of the movie (it's about 2 and a half hours long) and that it wasn't funny at all but I liked it. Yay.

Care to enlighten me as to what Eli Roth's Hostel movies are if not purely torture porn?

 

Saw seemed to have a tongue in cheek edge to it, a bit like Evil Dead back in day had, nowhere near as good as Evil Dead series ofc, but you get my drift.

 

Hostel movies seem to have no soul, they're just horrible and terrible

I recently watched Rosemary's Baby as well. What a strange movie! I'm disappointed I recently missed a film print of this being shown under the thematic pretext of Gender and the Monstrous. I see a lot of space for that dialogue. Cassavetes and Farrow were excellent. Only watched Knife in the Water before this so maybe Repulsion next?

 

Saw a print of John Huston's Wise Blood. Another odd one. Not really sure what to say about this really. A lot of questions and several characters just seem to disappear. Of course, I haven't read the Flannery O'Conner's book of the same name but I've had it on my shelf for some time so maybe this'll provoke me to read it soon. Apparently it's well thought of as an adaptation. Brad Dourif sort of suprised me - didn't recognize him as the same person in LotR.

 

Also recently watched Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life. I'm really starting to appreciate his style and this over the top melodrama. I've only seen three of Sirk's releases but they all have encouraged me to write about them. And they're really atypical movies for me to watch. Which is great.

 

 

Just gettin into Polanski myself, you should definetely check out The Tenant aswell :) Next is Fearless Vampire Killers...

10/10 for certain

 

brilliantly shot, edited, jesus, what about this movie wasn't just about perfect? the many different emotions and the very carefully played dialogue quite frequently would give scenes double meanings or left questions open for consideration for the viewer. i wish i were a better critic so i could espouse more... so's dresses were beautiful and she was very fetching too, but her dresses definitely accentuated her beauty. score and soundtrack were absolutely spot on as well.

the upright citizens brigade did a whole redubbed version of It's a wonderful life that is really funny, it was never released officially but you can find it on most torrent places

 

it's called 'escape from it's a wonderful life'
