Autechre how do you organize your mp3/flac/whatever collection?

I need suggestions...I had more to say but now I can't think of any.

 

Is there a software or something that can use an online track database to correct those stupid mp3 tags that are always like the following?

i have been using tagscanner for ages. it is perfect. connects to discogs and automatically fills all needed tag fields. can also connect to a couple more databases.

 

also,

 

i have A to Z folders on my external hard drive, and artist folders inside them. best way for me.

1 folder called FLAC and 1 called mp3 thats it. I take a lot of care for right tags in itunes (cover-artwork and ids)

i don't like the way ppl organise tags so i rename everything .. but then it gets all lost in multiple harddrives .. stuff one pays good money for somewhere on one of those fuckers.

Here's how I do it on Windows.

 

Messy downloads folder -> drag everything into a new playlist in Foobar, then figure what I want to keep

Tag and download art with the foo_discogs foobar component. You have to tell the plugin to download art in its settings.

The I created some file operation presets in Foobar. They read the now correct tags then rename/move the file accordingly. When you install Foobar you have to select to install 'file operations,' don't know why it isn't checked by default, pretty stupid.

 

Rename: $if(%tracknumber%,%tracknumber%). %title%

Will end up like: 01. Track name.file ext

 

Move: $left($stripprefix(%artist%),1)\%album artist%\%album%\%filename%

Will organise my stuff like: \a\artist\album - You just have to set a music folder the first time you create the preset, after that you can just go select, right click, file op, "move" preset

 

Can't imagine a better way for me as it's right in the media player, no faffing around with anything else.

Tagscanner, a beauty.

 

here it is how it works:

you drag-drop the files to the main window, click 'tag processor' and search, for example, on discogs. the program will show you a list of all the versions listed, for the release you were searching for, and when you click save, it will automatically fill all the tag fiels, depending on the release version you chose, cover artwork included. usually 600x600 pixels, the standard discogs size.

 

it is perfect for me, because i need to have everything properly tagged. it is almost like a paranoia.

As far as the scheme on my PC it goes MP3 Folder > Genre > Artist > Album

i use itunes, and just fill in as many fields in as i can. i used to put the label and cat# in the comment field, but it got too OCD. I care most about having the correct years on my mp3's, even on comps i look up when seperate songs were released and put the correct year on each of them.

Does it really matter to have filenames correct? as long as you have a proper folder structure *and* a good tag organisation

ive no appetite or OCD for file name continuity between folders

i haev a \lossy\ and a \lossless\ folder -- no genre subfolders, only artists

 

i recently used foobar + discogs plugin to easily sync up with discogs for id3 tags and auto download album art

i only do this for lossless

I don't really organize much. When I rip a cd it puts it into the right folder (or creates one) anyways.

 

Music drive -> Artist folder -> Album folder

 

Only ocd about album art I just grab it from discogs.

 

 

Actually I do re-organize certain things like Aphex Twin stuff, I put it(and all his other stuff under diff names) all into a RDJ folder.

As long as it has proper artist/album/title tags I don't really pay attention, nor do I care what the file name says. But if it isn't in the right folder, someone near me may die when I can't find it.

I also sort by 'A-Z' folders, then 'Artist - Album' folders. Works like a charm, and been using the same system for as long as I can remember.

 

Can't believe people who can sort on genre? I have a hard time labeling genre even on my own music..

Ya, there is some stuff that is genre crossing, but I keep the folders the same, and just try to put it where the music fits best: Ambient, Braindance, Rock, Indie, Rap, Reggae, and Pop are the genre folders I have. I just like to go into a certain genre folder, and browse until I find something that catches my fancy.

I'm using CopyTrans right not to get all my music from my iPod onto my new laptop. I only ever use iTunes, and also spend a lot of time making sure that albums are listed correctly and trying to blag artwork.

 

I haven't bought music in years. The last CD I bought was Belong - October Language. I figured that's a pretty good way to go out.
