eh i kind of breezed through this one. was fun and some of the puzzles were clever (like the last bit that required transferring goo through multiple wormholes)

good thing this game will undoubtedly get more hardcore mappacks through the modding community (like Prelude and the Flash pack of the 1st game)

the most annoying bits, as yahtzee completely correctly pointed out, were the bits where you were in those vast rooms searching for the square inch of wall that was portal-able.

Fuck that shit. Those parts were agonizing.

I actually really liked those parts. I felt like they were kind of interludes giving you a sense of exploration and breathing room, especially after some of the more difficult, small-room puzzles. I rarely got stuck in those parts, maybe because I wasn't looking for a way to progress but just wanting to check things out. I did get stuck during my second playthrough right after the fall where you have to put a portal inside that door that is partially cracked, that I agree is kind of easy to miss.

I can definitely see where you're coming from there, but for me they were 'i wanna get back to the puzzles' segments... though the turret factory part was awesome (especially catching one before it gets thrown into the incinerator).

Is anyone else developing a slight long fall boot fetish?

I mean, I'm not, either.

I was thinking about them yesterday, actually... as cool/sexy as they are on Chell, I have a hard time thinking they'd look as awesome in real life.

Valve typically have a fantastic eye for level design. Not only do their environments feel lived-in, but I feel very free moving around in them despite the fact that their levels are extremely linear. The first Half Life was full of fantastic moments in which I felt like I was somehow exploiting the game engine in order to progress through the level. It's not unusual for me to feel mighty clever after shimmying across an incredibly narrow beam, or piece of tubing sticking out the side of the wall. Only in retrospect, though, did it become apparent that they had planned for the player to take just such a route.

Also, while I'm on the subject of the first Half Life, I would like to praise Valve for their enemy AI. By the time you start fighting against the soldiers storming Black Mesa I was having the time of my life getting into gunfights with three or four of them at a time. Their evasive tactics and alternation between aggressive and defensive movement was really stimulating to go up against. I really had to have my wits about me when going up against them. Good stuff.

As I couldn't afford to buy it when it first came out, and just got it very recently, I've now finally beaten both co-op and single player, and feel as if I can visit this thread safely.

I have a bit of a non-gameplay related complaint;

What the fuck was up with the co-op credits? Those human models looked terrible and totally out of place in the Portal universe, or in any source game for that matter. On top of that, the credits lasted 6 minutes, and not a second of it was funny or interesting.

All in all though, amazing game of course.

I've been playing Half Life 2 to try and replace Portal 2 in my life. I gave up on it a year ago and am having another go but it's not nearly as fun and I don't really like the way it gets me all tense and trigger happy, I want to relax when I'm playing games

If you own HL2 episode 2, you can run this free mod called Research and Development. No weapons other than eventually getting the Gravity Gun, which you will have to use creatively. Basically the goal, like Portal, is to move forward by figuring out puzzles. This mod is fucking BRILLIANT.

Also, on the Portal tip, if you own the 1st portal, you can play a few good mods too. Standouts being:

Gamma Energy Not that hard at all, but fun. Tells the Portal story a slightly different way. New boss battle.

Factum Solus Not too challenging, but part 1 of an episodic series with an intriguing story. New gameplay elements are added. Short, but very much worth a play.

Portal Prelude HARD! Really fucking hard! I'm a good ways through it now but goddamn.

Portal: The Flash Version Map Pack Basically this takes the flash portal, and converts those maps into "real" portal. Hard at times, but not impossible. Has a boss battle.

That's all I've played so far.

I've just downloaded 2 more portal mods, i'll review them once done.

I didn't even know there were mods, I'm on a Mac though and it looks confusing. I tried that Gamma Energy one and it's opening Xcode windows I don't understand
