Need New Music

So It's been a while since I've found something that I've been completely blown away by. I know there's a lot of great music out there waiting to be discovered, and much of it has been out for years too, but My problem is that I can be a bit impatient / fussy / particular / etc. when it comes to new music. I'm sure a lot of us feel that way, but while I think I'm a moderately picky guy, it's probably not half as bad as the regulars of this forum  I've tried using internet radio from sites like last.fm and have found a few good artists that way, but I feel like I have to wade through all this terrible generic crap to find just one track that resonates with me, and sometimes I wonder how these tracks are even remotely related to the artist they're supposed to be finding similar results to. In short, I resent it!

So maybe I need to try asking Humans for recommendations. I started listening to Electronic music pretty much exclusively in the last few years, and I'm sure there is plenty before that that I've missed out on. Some stuff that I've been really enamored with the last year or so and that I want to find something similar to: Andy Stott, Flying Lotus, Actress, Clams Casino, Lukid, Burial (latecomer).

Labels with great artists + artists you mentioned you like:

Brainfeeder (Flylo)

Modern Love (Andy Stott)

Werk Discs (Actress, Lukid)

TriAngle (Clams Casino)

Hyperdub (Burial) - [also check out Planet Mu, Hotflush, Ninja Tune, and Warp]

oldenjon, I noticed you have the cover Run DMT's album Dreams as your avatar and if that's any indication of what you like I'd check out these cassette tape labels, easily my current obsession:

Leaving Records http://leavingrecords.com/ (They put out a really great compilation recently with Sun Araw, Julia Holter and Odd Nosdam among those who have released tapes on the label)

Astro:Dynamics http://astrodynamics.bandcamp.com/ (released 1991's debut, one of my favorite last year that sounds like BoC + OPN and maybe VHS Head if he stuck with ambient only)

Constellation Tatsu http://www.ctatsu.com/

SicSic Tapes http://www.sicsic.de/

The last two are more ambient (found them via this local radio show called Fade To Yellow) and experimental, Leaving Records is run by Matthewdavid of Brainfeeder and is partnered with Stone Throw for distribution (Alpha Pup and Plug Research are also part of the same distributers). Lot more hip-hop and beat-heavy but still out there. There's also a Texas-based tape label I found recently that I really dig called Pour Le Corps http://pourlecorpsrecords.bandcamp.com/releases

In terms of more "popular" indie rock and electronic music I'd recommend Grimes, the xx, and Menomena (band I really latched onto randomly). If you like reggae/dub then check out Sun Araw's collaboration with the Congos and if you like metal I can easily recommend Darkthrone's new album The Underground Resistance.

The lists are solid too - best of 2012 as voted by WATMM

last.fm bases recommendations not on similarity, but more on "users that listen to [artist] also listen to [recommendation misnamed as similar]"

Yeah it varies so much - it plagues a lot of artists on Rephlex - like Gentle People do not sound like most of the "recommended artists." It's also rather useless when you're trying to find lesser known acts of popular artists - their lists are usually just other successful peers. It can be incredibly useful for some more niche genres though.

I’m too uninformed to be much use here but what I will say is that the ONE (1) album from the last few years that continually blows me away every single time I listen to it is “Personality” by Scuba. It’s a much brighter, dancier album than what you’ve mentioned so far, but what the heck, worth a try.
