Who are your favorite philosophers? 1 2 3 4

I really respect Kant, Thoreau, Whitman, Plato, and the Indian sage Nisargadatta. I'd like to know about some more thinkers. Feel free to include insightful philosophers of art, poets, and others who inspire higher learning. I would also like to read quotes by them, so if you find something definitive to characterize their attitudes, I warmly welcome those into this thread. For me, Whitman embodies the philosophical ideal of all of the above mentioned thinkers in his poetry, so here is an excerpt from Song of Myself:

So recently when I open certain threads here at WATMM my browser automatically downloads this file called "download". What's up with this?

I'm making breakfast and the idea popped into my head of eating an apple with my omelet. The following thought was "fuck that, apples are overrated."

I was watching some documentary and there was a guy playing a french horn. If I had a french, horn, I would play very soft, mysterious music on it, so I searched "Mysterious Horn..." and then google completed my search "mysterious horn sounds from the sky". I started watching the videos and I have to say, I haven't been this freaked out in a long time. I could make some of these sounds pretty easily in ableton using a noise source, but the ubiquity of the videos makes me doubt that this is a hoax. Here is an article. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2110523/Whats-causing-mysterious-sounds-coming-sky-loud-set-car-alarms.html Some of the…

I thought I should offer information based on the unique opportunity I had to spend two months on the other side of the world in a country of controversy. If anyone has any questions about Iran or my visit there I'd be glad to answer them as best as I can

Since a year (or two), everybody speaks about how Iceland did a wonderful job in the crisis, like how they threw away their government and let the banks go bankrupt. And put to trial the "bad guys", including the bank owners and the politicians... Plus they helped their people get away with their debt problems. At least that's what is being reported in the news everywhere (at least in Europe). Now for some harsh truth: http://studiotendra.com/2012/12/29/what-is-actually-going-on-in-iceland/ This is an Icelandic guy explaining rather plainly (he's angry too lol) what the situation really is right now...

Silent Hill: Revelation, based on Silent Hill 3. It looks like shit. They've tied in some dumb fucking love interest, and apparently changed Heather's character completely. I can honestly say that I'm glad they skipped the best game to try and hit a wider target audience because I know that they'd fuck that one up, too. They know that all the Silent Hill game fans will go see it just because it's called "Silent Hill", so all they're concerned with is trying to appeal to a wider audience. Hollywood really likes to ruin good things. As a side note, I love how you have to watch an ad to watch an ad.

FIFA 13 or PES 13 1 2

I debated putting this in the video games thread or maybe even the Football subforum...? Alas, I am going to be playing the early release of FIFA 13 this weekend in preparation for my yearly debate/decision. It's more difficult this year since the PES demo seems much stronger than the last few. PES 11 and 12 were bleh. Based on both demos, the gameplay of PES 13 is arguably superior. Unfortunately, Konami is still dogged by horrible presentation and a crappy manager mode. The attacking side of things is excellent in the FIFA 13 demo, but CPU defending is atrocious, as evidenced in the review from IGN. Watch the goal from Aguero at 1:36 in the video revi…

I stumbled across this IMDB user last night and was tripping fucking out reading his interpretations of this film....i found them simply outlandish at first, but gave some time and followed him and it was actually really engaging. he's put enough work into it for it to qualify as an academic study.. http://www.imdb.com/user/ur17606738/boards/profile/ if for nothing else than an interesting read, laughs, it's very good.

I had prawns for the 1st time and i dont think they agree with me. Already been on the toilet about 5 times and feel like im gonna puke any time now. Thing is i havent had any liquids for about 8 hours (have had prawns and other food since then). So, doctors, should i be getting water down me even though im going to be sick? Like could i have a problem puking food up if i havent drank enough liquids for hours? I'm imagining a bunch of dry food in my stomach. lol edit. this is probably time sensitive.

there's a musical genius hiding inside my progenitor

My dad is 52 years old. He's never touched an instrument in his life, shows no interest or appreciation for art, and doesn't listen to music. He watches news, snores, and does boring adult stuff day in and day out. But lately he's been coming home and rocking the shit out of our piano. I watch him sometimes. His eyes close. His rhythm is perfect. He picks up scales kinesthetically. It's like he's beethoven or something. He sits for an hour or more and just rocks the fuck out of it.

“The Universe actively loves itself and all of its parts. The world loves itself and all of its parts. It is not true that energy is neutral or indifferent. Energy is active, positive, propelled by what can almost be described as an instantaneous pleasure with itself and its characteristics. Despite all concepts to the contrary, energy is indeed at its basis, love. It is also composed of highly charged consciousness that operates in almost a leapfrog fashion, with great bursts of exuberance and vitality. The great, the greatest creative force, that force that is the origin for all physical life did not suddenly appear once in some distant past, sparking the birth of your …

I just got back in town at 9 this morning from Portland, OR on a 7 am flight. Usually, my "go time" is 10am, sharp. Sometimes it's a little early, but usually, it's a strong 10. Today, because I was traveling and dealing with cat allergies, I figured I'd relax in a bath and then drop some bombs shortly after. Nothing was out of the ordinary, no real cramps or sudden urges. Following a bath, I usually lay on a blanket and dry off while listening to WNYC or the JS Bach pandora channel on my iPhone. today it was Wnyc. When I was dry, I lit a scented candle got on the pot, like I normally do. It was about 10:50. I started my on-the-pot routine of checking my email and my W…
