Honestly, I think the only thing that could possibly hurt him at this point is some pedo shit. I think he could murder someone on live television, and as long as that person had liberal leanings, it would help his approval ratings.

It's still water off a duck's back as far as his base.

Little Donny gets in trouble and his loyal fans just hug him tighter.

Those polls almost never react within a day, usually a week or so...and even then, the trending is what matters for the most part (they often don't react sharply to any news, good or bad). That said, this probably will all be water off a duck's back like you said...until Congress gets up from off their knees kissing Trump's ass or sucking him off, he's probably going to plow through damned near anything. Even then, he's going to have 25% of the people praising him. There could literally drop multiple N-word tapes, sex tapes with McDougal and Daniels, and the piss tape of Russian hookers all tomorrow, and I don't doubt for a moment he'd still have 20% or so.

Do you think they're clinging to him as a lone beacon of relevance like they did with Palin? I just want to know where that line is for them. I guess we'll find out soon enough, one way or another.

They've been deceived by their hero, the greatest snake oil salesman that ever lived. They will cling to him until the snake oil runs out. Even once he throws in the towel and admits defeat, he will still have 15% believing he's some great biblical messenger. Those crumbling Confederate statues will be soon replaced with grand edifices to the great orange leader...

^ Agreed, I'm sticking with my broad "4 types of Trump supporter" pet theory and of that bunch the "Naive Ignorant" and "Pragmatic" supporters will bow out first and rather humbly. The right-wing extreme (the fringe folks) and the religious right / 'traditional' right-wing base will stick around until the end. I think most would eventually acknowledge the mistake but many will still frame it in some delusional manner that absolves them of complacency or excuses it to some degree. My biggest question is whether this will usher a final GOP split into two parties and/or reshuffle things altogether - including a Dem split between truly left-wing social democrats and centrists.

Either way shit is going to get really weird indeed. I just hope it doesn't dissolve into a last desperate burst of violent hysteria from his most un-hinged base: bombings, mass shootings, armed mobs.

I do hope the truly left wing democrats get a bit more ready for prime time. That Ocasio Cortez ho seems a bit too dumb and says shit that isn't even true, making herself an easy target. I'm also completely over Bernie Sanders since mid-late 2016.

If Adam Schiff ran for pres I'd vote for my that rational, no bullshit motherfucker. Joe Biden? Yeah fuck it why not? Let's get some rational boring ass motherfuckers up in this bitch running the USA and shit

This right here.

We need someone like Laurie Bream from Silicon Valley.

Hillary had the credentials but she had way too much baggage and was too bitter and spiteful.

it's not just that, she's basically as anti-progressive as most Repubs but hides it.

The whole point is to win back AT LEAST the house of representatives in November, which is still no guarantee. This is fucking crucial, like a fucking national security imperative. The democrats will have to look at this like Moneyball, not a Bernie Sanders, circlejerk, which won't be anywhere near as effective as you think. They need to take a stance that will wake up the lite-Trump voters to vote for them as well if we don't wants to be shitting our pants this election either. After that, it's go time, baby.

Yes.

I don't think a "bernie sanders circlejerk" will be succesful in the whole. But the democratic party is a pox, it needs to be eradicated.

Also yes... but not right now. We got the dose of crazy the country has been begging for, and now it's about time to restore (relative) sanity.

Well, now is definitely not the time to eradicate the Democratic party(or ever wtf???) But getting the Republicans out of office is the first baby step we need to take towards getting an actual functioning government that still gives a shit about basic things like not holocausting citizens through horrible legislation. Save whatever you want for later, if you go full Ocasio Cortez right now shit will not turn out well.

Hillary?? I mean policy-wise, sure, but other than that she wasn't even well-loved among a good chunk of the Democratic base, never mind other voters. On the other hand she did win the popular vote, and it wasn't the first time that happened. So I guess gaming the system has to take the electoral college into account. What a broken system.

This quote from a Trumpite after a rally before the electron says it all

"I'm from a mining town. He said he's going to re-open them. I know he's lying - but at least he gives us hope" - sorry i don;t have the audio. it was from a news show back in 2017

How the hell are you even supposed to deal with that kind of mind?

The juror that kept hanging up the Manafort case and led to mistrial on 10 of the 18 counts had the same mentality.

It isn't just seen at the crest of the most loyal supporters back in 2016 or 2017, it's defacto now.

Yeah let’s keep talking about abolishing ICE even though it only looks like a winning strategy to the kind of people who wrote Bernie in on the ballot and handed Trump the presidency. Their messaging sucks right now and so does most peoples’ understanding of the current political climate apparently. Bernie and Cortez are basically controlled opposition meant to polarize voters even more.

Don’t forget that Bernie’s campaign manager Tad Levine also advised Yanukovich in Ukraine... sort of like Paul Manafort. And that if he never ran, Trump wouldn’t be president.

why?

I think y'all are framing this as a national candidate question. We aren't there yet. You don't have to apply the "how left should the Dems become?" rhetorical question for all elections: midterms are nuanced and complicated. Ocasio Cortez couldn't win Texas but Beto has a good chance. Beto would never fly in a solid blue district in the NE or urban West Coast city. I have no qualms about these centrist, moderate, or even conservative Dems thrown in to win races from ANY GOP incumbent. Candiru is right about this being a crucial issue. We literally need to flush the GOP out because even their moderates are copping out right now.

All of the collusion, targeted swing districts, electoral college absurdity aside, etc. Hilary Clinton lost because she tried to be a moderate catch-all candidate. The reality is that loses votes instead of gaining them. She did win over moderate Republicans and independents but it was cancelled out by the far more voters who either skipped the election or said fuck it and voted for Trump. Apathy, naivety, and desperation in the rust belt won it for Trump, she nabbed 1 million + in the popular vote but the few thousand who swung swing districts in swing states actually put him in power. The knee-jerk attacks about her being elitist, establishment, aloof, etc. - that shit sticks. That's why the shady social media attacks and relentless rhetoric (emails, the foundation, the deep state) crap was so crucial and damning. Bernie would not have gained any moderates and perhaps fewer independents but he would have gained more Dems who skipped out. The GOP would have had to attack him on policy (i.e. use the word socialist 1000x more) but he would not have the baggage of perceived corruption or establishment elitism.

Biden in 2020 will just be 2016 all over again, because he's got the same perceived negative attributes - literally everyone who thinks he's a potential contender is thinking of other Democrats. The should be thinking of all of the people they'd consider flippant. After all the GOP overthought this with McCain and def with Romney - both men were way more moderate than the GOP base. Obama didn't win 2012 so much as right-wingers and apathetic independents didn't bother to vote.

Tammy Duckworth is the only person I consider a potential 2020 contender at the moment (feel free to recommend others). She looks and sounds working-class. She's a combat vet, a mom, she's progressive and educated, and she breaks away from the Clinton-Bush cycle. Hell, her last name alone might get some rural working class votes. People are that superficial.

I hate Bernie bros and Bernie culture as much as most reasonable people (despite being pretty okay with the man himself), but Bernie fans writing in his name didn't hand Trump the election, in no way was that what happened. "If he never ran..." is a silly argument as well and you know it, you're a smart dude: this is the general section of a webforum dedicated to niche electronic music, this is very serious.
