the remains of the day - 10/10

This is one of my favourite books, will have to check it out.

Antichrist - 3/5. I liked it but the entire time I was anxious about the infamous scissor scene which probably stopped me from enjoying the rest as much as I would have done. It had some lush shots and the scissor moment wasn't even as bad as expected. After seeing À l'intérieur any scene involving scissors probably appears tame in comparison.

Coraline  /10

My expectations werent too high, because they´ve been washed out by burtons other movies after Nightmare before christmas. But Selick (whom I didnt know very much) did a wonderful job, the amount of details in the movie is simply overwhelming.

Zardoz. Amazing. There is nothing better than watching Sean Connery run around in red underwear for an hour and 45 mins.

I see Zardoz on worst film lists and don't understand why.

The Walls of Sana'a - Short '70s documentary about the Yemen capital. Essentially the film is a request for UNESCO to protect the ancient city's architecture from modern development. I grabbed it from usenet but you can watch a lowres version with red subtitles on youtube or d/l here http://scalisto.blogspot.com/2009/12/pier-paolo-pasolini-le-mura-di-sanaa.html

Not really related but it reminded me of Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, and that I've got to read more about his travels.

Splice - 7.5/10

some really cool scenes.....might grow on me with multiple viewings....lots of taboo subjects explored....reminds me of early Cronenberg.....and Dren is awkwardly hot and extremely fucked up!

got to see the director talk about the film after it and what seemed like an anti-cloning film apparently isn't, go figure....he said he is all for it if it can benefit mankind, really nice guy...the director of Cube

definitely one of the better sci-fi films I have seen in a while....

Andrei Rublev - Any films set in a similar time period with some realism/historical accuracy anyone can recommend? Geography doesn't matter.

Fish Tank - 6/10

Well acted and definitely engaging, at first, coming-of-age film. It did seem a bit indie-film-101, but I'll take that over Hollywood 101 any day. I really enjoyed how lively the film is... the environment felt very real and flowed with certain raw-like beauty. The protagonist, the driving force of the film, though well acted, was a bit flat and predictable with little to no room for engagement or empathy. It also seemed to try a bit too hard to depict how rough it is in these essex estates. All in all, it had potential but the story just fell flat.

i'd give it 3 more points if ewan mcgregor wasn't in it with his shit accent and am-dram acting ability. does he annoy americans too or is cos i is scottish?

these all-star extravaganzas rarely hit the mark.

yeah, ill agree with you there. he really dragged the film down. for some reason he decides it necessary to over act whenever he plays an american. not to mention his accent is indeed shit.... he should be barred from playing americans.

i really liked ewan mcgregor early in his career, and then he suddenly turned shit, what happened?

trainspotting and shallow grave are the only good ones i can think of then he disappeared up his own arse.
