I agree that he lays it on a bit thick with the PHD stuff but I would say is what he's doing is refusing to go the way Fox news wants him to go, i.e. becoming aggressive and argumentative. By not going in that direction, remaining polite and continuing to come from an angle of reason he's frustrating the hell out of them as they want him to follow their programmed 'provoke and then shout down' pattern.
