How does the World view America these days?

also, 100+ children working in meat packing plants across 8 states. all linked to one company. hmmm..

From stakeouts to warrants: How federal investigators found more than 100 children cleaning slaughterhouses

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/government-investigation-into-slaughterhouse-cleaning-company-that-hired-children-60-minutes-transcript-2023-05-07/

largest hedge fund in the world is partial investor in the company... of course. they said they did due diligence when investing and didn't find anything wrong. some reporters staked out a parking lot and watched a shift change and that's all it took to find that children were working there.

Quote

So, it was a shock in 2022 to learn that an American company, owned by a Wall Street firm, sent children as young as 13 to work in slaughterhouses. The disgrace was more disturbing because the company, PSSI, is vital to national food safety and its owner, Blackstone, claims to be a model of management. Both companies say they had no idea they employed children in eight states. But it was obvious to teachers in Grand Island, Nebraska who noticed acid burns on a child.

In our story, you will see only two photos of children working in a slaughterhouse. Because of privacy, two, with obscured faces, are all the U.S. Department of Labor would give us. But two may be enough. Their hard hats read "PSSI" for Packers Sanitation Services Incorporated-- the nation's leading slaughterhouse cleaning service with 15,000 workers, in 432 plants, taking in more than a billion dollars a year. Not, it seemed, a likely abuser of children.

^that truly is America and not just the greed of the business in particular. from the article:

Quote

Parents purchased false identities. Children were coached to lie. But it was up to PSSI to ensure its operations didn't create a market for child labor. In its defense, a top PSSI official told us, off camera, "[We] own this." "We know we made some mistakes." "It's inexcusable." PSSI now says it has fired more than three dozen local managers.

related(ish): America is lining up active duty military at the Mexican border right now.

He can either livestream a “show” or put up clips and try to thread them. There is currently no way to “broadcast” a 30 or 60 minute show on Twitter. Plus Boomers will ask what channel Twitter is on.

i watched some of the frontline episode last night but it didn't really get into the dirt. interesting about how she was in a cult and is "all in" when she finds a thing that she likes.. Qanon maybe?

but, the behind the bastards multi part podcast on him is way better. it goes deeper into his childhood and all his porn addictions and his regular behaviors in the office.. like coming in on monday and describing scenes in the porns he watched over the weekend.. rating them like a film critic.

it also dabbles in some speculation about why he hates "affirmative action" so much.

here's part one.. i think there's 3 or 4 parts..

the 2nd half gets into some dirt but it’s simply laying out the path to the revelations of the last months and then reiterating them. i walked away from it with a little better insight into his/their past, and feeling that Thomas seems like a really sad character tbh. and Ginny seems like a fucking loon of even higher levels than i’d known.

You guys seem to have a gun problem.

morning and nightly news lately is just a barrage of mass shootings/unnecessary shootings. it's really, really pathetic. honestly can't even keep up anymore. the randoms i see walking around with pistols on them has increased significantly over the last few years (and i go almost nowhere besides home & work).

An analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation, a research nonprofit, that relied on 2020 data compiled by the CDC found that firearms were the No. 1 cause of death for children and teens in the U.S. Those deaths included accidents, suicides, and homicides. The analysis found that in 2020 alone, gun-related violence killed 4,357 children (ages 1-19 years old) in the U.S. By comparison, motor-vehicle deaths accounted for 4,112 deaths in that age range.

...

Researchers have not determined exactly why children's deaths from gun violence in the U.S. had risen so considerably since 2020, but some emphasized that the increased availability of guns, especially handguns that tend to be used in homicides and suicides, likely played a role.

why any civilian needs an AR-15 is beyond me. I know 2 people IRL that have admitted to having one. 1 is a deceptive lying piece of shit human, who once told me he wears body armor when he goes to get his kids from his ex-wife. the other is a divorced ex-Marine with his own personal demons.

they were actually banned for 10 years in USA (1994 - 2004) - https://www.npr.org/2019/08/13/750656174/the-u-s-once-had-a-ban-on-assault-weapons-why-did-it-expire

Republicans play dumb and blame mental health. I blame Republicans for continually stalling legislation, allowing high powered military grade assault rifles - designed for killing in the battlefield - to be allowed to be sold legally to anyone 18 or older. there is zero common sense applied here. these weapons do not need to be sold to the public.

gun violence is nothing new in USA. I remember growing up in Houston in the early '90s, the murder rate was through the roof (570 homicides in 1990, 608 in 1991) https://flo.uri.sh/visualisation/4318129/embed. every night on the local news, it was first 10 minutes of nothing but murders. I remember as a kid, not thinking I'd live to be 30, because I figured I'd get shot. that shit was majority gang on gang violence though, not this mass shooting of random civilian crap that sadly happens every month now in USA. just seems like no end in sight to this...which is just incredible, because it all goes back to one thing - guns - and how fuckin easy they are to get here.

Somewhat related but I was fired from my first job doing asbestos removal/glovebagging when I was 14 years old lol (when they found out my age). Minors aren’t supposed to be doing this kind of work and obviously (as the article points out) this wasn’t an oversight, clerical error. Pure exploitation of cheap child labour. Kids going to school with acid burns etc? jfc…

sheesh. that sounds rough. at 14 i had a bunch of shitty jobs here and there but nothing that hazardous. fuckn hell. worst i had to deal with was mowing lawns around the neighborhood and on weekends getting picked up at 3am to go work at a flea market that opened stupid early. i worked in the concession trailers selling donuts and shitty hot dogs and eating whatever i wanted and got paid $50 cash at the end of the day. as soon as i saved enough money to buy the bike parts i wanted i quit that shit.

btw, the hotdogs were frozen and came in a box of 50. a solid mass of 50 frozen hotdogs all jammed together that we'd just drop into a huge pot of hotdog water and let them boil. i don't think we ever changed the water.

Man… 17.75 an hour back then? My parents didn’t feed me and I had to pay my own school fees etc so for me it was a no brainer and I didn’t understand the dangers ofc. You worked as a youth too it’s interesting to see the different pathways… Im not sharing for a pity party or anything just that was my experience!
