She was an Ungarndeutsche / Danube Swabian, a part of the German minority in Hungary that was expelled during the Second World War. She had to flee to Nazi Germany, where she married my grandfather, who had to flee from Hauerland in what is now Slovakia where the Carpathian German minority, which has been living in this area for generations as a result of the Habsburg monarchy (a former multiethnic superstate), was persecuted in the course of the Slovak national uprising, which fought the fascist collaborative Slovak Nazi regime but also massacred the German minorities who had nothing to do with national socialism. He was taken prisoner of war but was able to escape execution from a partisan concentration camp and flee to Nazi Germany, where he was forced to join the Waffen SS as a conscript. His blood type was tattooed on his arm and then he was sent to the French front, where he was shot. He then was 15 years old. He returned to the homeland of his ancestors as an injured man: Swabia. There he met my grandmother and together they lived in diaspore, being spit on by the non-refugee mostly Catholic part of the population, many of which were Nazis. He learned the profession of carpenter and built a house in which he founded a family. That's the paternal side of my family history which is similar to the maternal one.
