Soundcards
by Guest Drahken- 3 replies

Looking to perk up a machine I just got and use it for audio but I'm struggling to figure out which kind of sound card I want without blowing too much cash. Here is what I want: At least 1 decent input for recording (Not entirely essential atm) At least 1, but preferably two MIDI i/o More than one channel so I can record on one in cubase and playback on another as well as properly use traktor for cueing. Decent Headphone jack that isn't hard to reach. Needs to be PCI obviously. Anything on top of that is a bonus. The big things are the playback/recording in cubase and at least one midi i/o for my Yamaha Clavinova. I'd like to keep it around $100 o…

i made a 2 osc analogue monosynth, with a lfo / ar envelope / multimode 12db filter. it's got cv tune inputs for both oscs, osc sync, and it runs on batteries. you can also put an audio signal thru its filter with the audio in jack. all built into a gutted old soviet geigercounter. a little live demo, with just a smidgen of analog bbd (delay) from the mixer: http://ezrajacobs.net/geigerij-03.mp3 the lfo has a pretty large range: http://ezrajacobs.net/swiep.mp3 and some pics, made with my laptops webcam:

my cousin's making this film that he wants to enter into festival and comps etc - when i did a rough edit in one section i used 'rushup i bank 12' - obviously there's no way we'll get copyright clearance to use it, so has anyone got anything with a similar pace we could use? we'll do you a dvd and add a credit at the end. ps you might have to sign a couple of forms too... thats right, there's no catch!

Building a decent hardware studio 1 2
by Guest LJG- 34 replies

Hello all, hope your summer's going well... I recently got myself a laptop with all the bells and whistles, and have been tweaking around with demos for Reason, Ableton, and the like. The thing is I'm really not too excited about music creation within a software format. My only piece of gear apart from traditional instruments is an EMX-1 by korg. I have always had a blast working with it, and I love the hands on feel and sounds. So by comparison, doing music on a computer just lacks the same kind of fun for me. I understand that controllers can change all that, but the simplicity and directness of actual hardware machines, be they analog or VA just really …

Greetings all I recently downloaded an audio file that leaked last week in the Smashing Pumpkins community. The file is an unreleased studio song that is unavailable in any other form. Problem is that the track (and remember this is the only circulating copy) is fucked beyond belief after a few minutes and skips relentlessly. Opinions of the artist in question aside, does anyone know any utilities that could help repair the file? At the moment it's virtually unlistenable once the skipping begins. Have a listen and see what you think! http://www.sendspace.com/file/9am5o2

Monome MIDI controller
by Guest Wall Bird- 14 replies

These last few months I've been pining over one of these: http://monome.org/ I'm sure a few of the people here are familiar with this controller. Does anyone have one? What do you think? This seems like it would be the MIDI controller for me, except for a few points: +No touch-sensitive pads. I feel like this is a major oversight. The first thing I would probably try out when I got one of these was it's function as a drum pad and if there is no touch-sensitivity on a device of such high quality and flexibility I feel that it's too much of a drawback for something of such high cost, which brings me to my next point: +It's a bit expensive. I s…

VST LFO that syncs to tempo
by Guest The Bro- 20 replies

I'm having good fun messing around with LFO on basses and stuff but the problem I have is that what syncs well on one note with a particular beat will sound out of sync if I play a different note. I've looked around for a VST which is just an LFO but haven't found anything. Or better still what's the best way to keep beats with heavy LFO all in sync with the master tempo? Cheers.

Budget Mixer recommendations 1 2
by Guest The Bro- 27 replies
- 1.7k views
Am looking at purchasing a new mixer for multi use (studio and live situation). I have a budget of about £100. I probably don't need that many channels but am really struggling to come up with a decision. Started looking at USB mixers as the concept sounds quite tasty. Anyone had any experience with USB mixers and what's this I read about being able to transfering samples via usb back to the mixer? Can any USB mixers on the market double up as controllers too or are we talking firewire? Anyways am looking at this mixer which has phonos as oppose to jack inputs on the stereo channels which I believe is better because they're grounded. Soundcraft Compact 4 Mini De…

http://faderfox.de/ They look really nice for live performances with Ableton/Traktor etc, but they seem rather expensive (£150) Anyone used one before, or know similar things that are better/cheaper?

I am ready to buy a new laptop. I pretty much use exclusively FL6, & Goldwave. Will I have any problems if I buy a Vista PC, or should I just go with XP? Also, if FL is compatible, do I have to worry about VST's being compatible? Or will they be fine as long as the sequencer works?

Technical Prob with reason and rebirth
by Guest jamesy boy!- 6 replies

alrite peoples, just had a well annoying thing happen to me, just finished recording a filthy acid house track and went to export it and for some fucking unknown reason i cant seem to fix, rebirth is out of tune with reason and what sounded good when both programs were open now sounds shit. Rebirth seems to pitch everything up when it's re-wired through Reason, so to compensate i dropped the 303's an octave and thus it sounded good. When the tracks exported tho ReBirth keeps the original pitch it's meant to be at so now I have a really low and muddy sounding 303 in the track. Trying to compensate I just pitched everything back up and try to export it but it stil…

I'm going to be moving out on my own into a place where i need to be quiet most hours of the day, this means i'm probably going to be doing most of my producing, listening, mixing on headphones. I'm not trying to produce perfect music these days, so i don't need the best headphones money can buy, but i'd like to know your guys' input from a producing/mixing standpoint. Got any reccomendations?

I'd like to buy the right mic
by Guest meneedit- 11 replies

Hey all, I want to buy a really good mic for recording vocals as well as a pop filter. I'm looking at spending $300 AUD. I am aware that most good microphones cost more than that but that is all I can afford. I'm also wondering if microphones have improved over the years. It's just that every mic that I have used has been very bass sensitive. I would like to also buy a mic suited to recording from instruments e.g. Flutes, acoustic guitars, etc... so if you lot could recommend a mic for that I would also be reeeeeally happy Thank you very much P.S could somebody please tell me if there are special recording techniques for…

Fruity formula controller
by Guest meneedit- 3 replies
- 1.9k views
Hi guys, i've always noticed the formula controller in fruity loops and recently I wanted to actually use it for the first time. Now, i'm no good at programming or using code and I realise that the formula controller isn't that complicated but I still cant work out how to use it. All I need to know is how to get it to generate a random value and then set the speed of how often it generates each new value. (in steps). This is so that I can link some EQ bands to the random values to create some really good humanization in drums. Can somebody please explain to me how to use the rand syntax and set the speed of how often it occurs? Any help wo…

remixing snes themes
by Guest TEXX- 9 replies

Do you remember the donkey kong games for snes? Do you remember how epic the music was? If you don't i recommend you check it out. It's pretty great! How 'bout the crew here at watmm remix their favourite DK country song? Doesn't matter what game it's from, as long as it's a recognizable donkey kong song. Anyone wanna give this a go? MIDI files: DK 1 DK 2 DK 3 PS: The songs from the first game have been remixed in a compilation called "kong in concert" or something, but most of them where pretty sub par IMO, and not nearly electronic music enough. Maybe it's a better idea to just make a compilation remixing old snes themes. Let me know what you guys…

Linux audio
by Guest fiznuthian- 5 replies

I just recently set up Ubuntu Studio on this PC for messing around with music production software and various audio stuff. It's pretty neat, except Puredata crashes when I try to open a patch, and it won't close without a kill command. That and I can't figure out how to load samples into Seq24. So far this is pretty good. Beast and Rosegarden seem like very well done software. Anyone else do musics with Linux? How do you like it and can you recommend any software to play with?
