so since just before christmas i've become completely and utterly addicted to UFO: enemy unknown again (X-COM: UFO defence to my transatlantic brethren). absolutely superb game, and it's reminding me that games used be *difficult* back then. if you're not familiar, there's a management screen where you manage finances and a civ-like research tree, set up bases, and add things like radar, hangars and facilities, then use them to intercept UFOs. once intercepted, it switches to an isometric turn-based strategy style where you have to kill various aliens in various terrains and recover bodies, materials, and prisoners in order to further your cause of figuring out exactl…

This one of those surreal deaths that's not only untimely, but also that of a controversial and divisive person. I don't like most of what he said and did of late, but he was a fascinating and tenacious political commentator and pundit. He was a key partner at Huffington Post (when it started), and easily one of the few on the right who could actually run sleek and effective websites. I've seen condolences already from a left-leaning defense blog at Wired, who noted he was both a key source and sparring partner. I guess if Bill Maher died suddenly (especially of that would of occurred years ago) it'd be a similar reaction from those on the other end of the ideological spe…

We're now in the quarter-finals. In the last round infinity slipped by abandoned cities by only one vote, knocking out this tournament's number one seed. Factories at night, the number two seed, is still in the game, comfortably defeating fan favourite Space stations. Factories at night is now up against rookie player www.gaarg.tumblr.com. We'll see what kind of campaign pieces will appear there in the next couple of days. After the tough match in round 2, Slime mold won a comparatively easy victory over Not being able to explain yourself verbally. Fans of Not being able to explain yourself verbally may mobilize behind Being socially awkward and uncomfortable in t…

Ok, so I've been wrestling with the concept of ground for the past two weeks. I'm in an electrical engineering program at college, and let me preface this by saying I have no difficulty dealing with ground in a practical sense and understand it's general function very well. That being said, I've posed a few hypothetical scenarios about ground to a few of my professors and none of them can really give me a straight answer. So the crux of the issue is whether ground acts as an infinite source/sink of electrons, or whether it acts as a return path for current. Based on my musings, the two seem to be mutually exclusive. Take hypothetical scenario A. So we have a DC …

Yeah it's not April Fools anymore, it's real. This is not the film based on the Isaacson book, so there may be hope yet. I was hoping for Jeremy Davies or even Noah Wiley to play the role again. http://m.hollywoodreporter.com/news/two-and-half-men-ashton-kutcher-steve-jobs-biopic-306666

this really isn't worthy of a thread but whatever, im too annoyed to think straight right now. i wanted to change my current facebook artist page url (http://www.facebook.com/pages/mitch-murder/304065434705) to something more proper (like facebook.com/mitchmurder) so i tried a bunch of different variations, like: mitchmurder mitch.murder mitchmurderofficial mitchmurder.official mitchmurdermusic etc etc none of which is available then it started getting weird, mitchmurder80s mitchmurder1980 not available and finally mitchmurder.rossocorsa not available (rosso corsa is the label im on). the hell is this?! also, how the hell …

1 way ticket to Mars 1 2

I'm enjoying these hypotheticals so here's another. We are setting up a station on Mars and it will be continually expanded over the next 50-100 years You only have this one opportunity to go and you are the first group of 10 people. Ships will be going to Mars every couple of years with more groups of 10, supplies, equipment to continually expand shit. You have communication with Earth (on a 10 minute delay or whatever it is). it's highly unlikely that no-one you know will ever go because the groups are chosen at random. No returns Also where would you prefer to be punched: the groin, throat or nose?

16 competitors remain. The top 2 seeds, Abandoned cities and Factories at night, are still in the game, winning easy victories over Owls and Caves respectively. Autism and Masturbating furiously, which both had strong fan support, lost last round. We have yet to see who their fans will mobilize behind. Slime molds and Huge machinery both overtook their competitors after initially falling behind. The brackets can be viewed here: http://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=424823 Voting in this round ends April 1st, around 10-11 Vancouver time.

Hey, Before making my studies of sound engineering, I learnt video editing for two years. Back in the days I used Avid a lot ; the past years, I practically didn't edit any more. Still, I don't want to give up my knowledge in video editing and more generally in film making because I know that at some point I'd like to make one or several clips / short films again. Today, I'm going to work with an artist for a video of his work. The next weeks I'll have to edit it and I'm wondering if I'm going to look for a cracked version of Avid (I really love Avid work flow so I'm not considering to use Final Cut) or if I'll look for something else. Indeed, I like the i…

I've had this idea kicking around for a while, and I've finally gone ahead and brought it to life. It's simple: I have created 99 MP3 files of assorted length, totaling 60 minutes of audio. The files consist entirely of silence, with the exception of five disturbing noises. These noises are placed at random points throughout the 60 minutes of audio. The challenge is to listen to all 99 MP3s, at maximum volume, in a single 60 minute session. When I tried this earlier, nothing could prepare me for how terrifying it was. It sounds so simple, yet it cannot be underestimated just how powerful a technique it is. The experience lies not so much in the heart-stoppi…

We're now at round 2 of the tournament. There were a couple upsets in round one. Mossy stones crushed Yes (a Twitter post made by Boards of Canada). The great singularity managed to squeeze past Chernobyl. Terraforming planets won a close battle with machines that are smarter than man. In a big upset, Alternative universes beat IDM, a number 6 seed. The biggest upset was Endless airport parking lots at night in an unfamiliar city destroying Not releasing an album for 5+ years, a number 3 seed. Also, huge machinery beat moss in the final upset. Fans of moss may be mobilizing behind mossy stones. There also 3 very close matches. Windows 95 beat Lego by 1 vote. www.g…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17532470 Well, not quite "just like ours", but the findings of these new high precision satellites and detectors are starting to show us just exactly how much stuff is out there. I think maintain that life of some form will be found out there somewhere during my lifetime.
