lol, watmm has torn me a new one on Chronicle. What can I say, I even watched it a second time with the gf. Still liked it.

...and you hated Bronson! WTF indeed.

Ah bless. Internets.

To be fair, I haven't watched it to the end. Maybe it has a good climax? Just seems like what's the point, an incredibly stubborn, fame-hungry dude who somehow got the notion that the fastest way to infamy would be to act like the world's most extreme sociopath. Meh. He's no Jeffrey Dahlmer, he's not even Mike Tyson. Just a bad seed with a hair-trigger temper.

I like Bronson though.

Get the Gringo - 5/10 - Apparently this film is directed by someone named Adrian Grunberg but before this he'd only been an assistant director. I only mention this because I think Mel Gibson probably actually directed this and maybe they put the Grunberg guy's name on it because Gibson's rep is blown now. It has all the hallmarks of a Mel Gibson film; lots of gratuitously bloody violence, broadly drawn characters, etc. This is basically 'Payback' set in a Mexican prison, also, it's not as good as 'Payback'.

lol, I have it sitting on the shelf but still haven't watched it. I'm also something of a mel supporter (though a very ambivalent one at this point). I recently went on a bit of a Mel binge and when re-watching Mad Max and Lethal Weapon realized he's always been crazy. My pet theory is he was sexually abused as a kid. That would explain his willingness to start off by doing homoerotic flicks (Mad Max is full on "Gibson as sex object in tight pants" fetishism), his weird emphasis on masochism and suicide, and his friendship with Jodie Foster (another poster child for child sex abuse). Just my armchair theory. Doesn't make Braveheart or Apocalypto any less great films, tho.

Ha, just reading the couple of comments about Gibson and I had a mindfuck. I was thinking of Mel Brooks and wandered why the hell there was anything bad said towards him?

Then my brain caught up.

All is now ok.

So I'm about to watch Blade Runner for the first time. I've seen bits of it years ago, but no the whole thing from start to end.

My question: Which version is the best to watch? I just downloaded the 1997 cut. Is that the best one to watch?

I have a feeling that this movie is right up my alley. I want to watch the best version.

Help me WATMM. You're my only hope...

Screw it. I'm just gonna watch the 1997 cut version. It's already downloaded, so...

You've probably already watched it, but:

http://en.wikipedia....of_Blade_Runner

(spoilers in there)

The '92 "Director's" Cut and the 2007 "Final" Cut are the best, with the 2007 version basically being a polished, slightly "corrected" version of the 1992 cut.

No idea what the 1997 cut is, could be some fanboy attempt. It's probably not what you should watch, unless it's incorrectly titled.

You should probably just watch the Final Cut. It's not a Lucas-style revision: instead, it fixes a few (sometimes glaring) issues present in the editing of the 1992 Director's Cut while keeping that particular version of the narrative intact. Also, it looks pretty.

The U.S. Theatrical release has an unnecessary and poorly-delivered narration and an artificial unambiguous happy ending, will likely fall far short of any expectations you probably have about the movie.

savages - 4/10. possibly the worst ending to a movie I've ever seen. +2 points for having casino versus japan help with the score.

wait what, how is Jodie Foster a poster child for child sexual abuse? has she admitted to being sexually abused as a child? Or are you implying that her closeted lesbianism and friendship with Gibson means she was molested somehow,

Lost in Translation.

Surely has been discussed before in here, I don't care.

I had high expectations and they were met, what a nice feeling.

I'm using my powers of perception, or my powers of spreading scurrilous lies, take your pick :)

Sennen joyû (Millennium Actress) - Meandered about a bit too much. I prefer Satoshi Kon's other work. 3/5

Another Year - Fantastic. Great mix of characters. Kept me on the edge of my seat. 5/5

Zodiac - Because of the WATMM praise. Pretty good. But I'm not too keen on whodunit flicks. A bit too long as well. 3/5

And I watched the following on acid. They were all the best thing ever at the time so not ratings. :p

Kurosawa's Dreams - Some of these shorts were mindblowing. Too bad some aged really bad. Edit: hmm weird, I'm skipping through it now and I seem to have imagined some crappy special effects. Doesn't look as dated as I remembered.

Céline et Julie vont en bateau - I tried watching this sober once but it didn't really connect. It took a life of it's own while tripping though. Great stuff.

Giulietta degli spiriti - giulietta.gif

amen. Although it's a well-made film, iirc. There's a slew of films like that, including 127 hrs or whatev. Spoiled brats doing stupid shit and getting a posthumous hero's welcome. Weird stuff. Though I exempt Grizzly Man from that list, the guy is more intriguing and of course Herzog gets it bonus points.

Yeah. I mean, Timothy Treadwell was clearly bugged. On top of that, I think he had a pretty fucked up life. In fact, he reminded me a lot of some of the people that come through the City mission that i work at. So I sort of give him a weird pass. Not that what he did wasn't incredibly stupid, but I don't now. It is easier for me (and the bear) to swallow than people like Christopher McCandless. I can't totally dismiss his sentiments all together. I can see his actions stemming from some kind of frustration.. but he ended up seeming to be more of a victim of his own aspergers than he was a victim of his own intellect, like people try to portray him. OH MAN, SO DEEP. BURN ALL YOUR MONEY.

what a fucking jerk.

hee hee. Tbh I only remember hazy images from Into the Wild, can't recall his ideology. And I was over-reacting, I can't say I don't identify to some degree even with the doofuses, we've probably all been there in our teens, railing passionately against the injustices of the world when all we really want is for some hot chick to notice us. But it's just sad, and not worth writing a book/making a movie about. I do think Danny Boyle made some interesting choices with 127 days (and I'm no Boyle fan), on the face of it the plot seemed nonexistent but he did manage to tie in some of the more surreal aspects of modern life, the peculiar blend of extreme risk-taking with a lack of real-world experience (and common sense). The way young men who have lived very enclosed lives still feel the impulse to test and prove themselves, no matter how absurd the activity. I can't deny it, I used to be the same way. Hopefully have gotten a bit better with age.
