I enjoyed the avril 14th reworked, would love to hear more in this vein. In fact a touring Aphex orchestra being midi manipulated live would be ace!

he should pen audience parts for when cell phone ringers go off. friends can call in at the proper time

he did it so people can not say "oh same old idm again" when he releases his next album. like he did last time when he released men1 + men2 before the analords. men 1+2 was expected at that time the analords where not. Everybody expects him to do something more weird after what he did before so he did contemporary. I really like contemporary so I am really happy he did it and sad that I was not there to see it

Didn't this sort of thing happen with Squarepusher/Sinfionetta and he basically blew that popsticle stand realising that electronic is electronic and orchestral is orchestral and we all basically know that a mish mash sounds exactly that. So he let them do a few covers and gave us tundra 4 live instead at that gig....

ok, just watched that vid, against my better judgement. it was about as i feared. it's one of those god-awful modern pieces that sounds like an orchestra tuning up for ten minutes (like at the end of A Day In The Life, right before that amazing D chord). and it's all cameraphone quality.

how exciting this is -- the aphex twin having something or other to do with ten minutes of atonal orchestral noodling! he stands in the background with his laptop as some dude conducts! is he doing something, or just standing there? i have absolutely no idea! look now, this is serious avant garde. they're slapping their violins (@4:06). it's serious avant garde because they are slapping their violins

ohh hat, you're not even righteous to yourself with this judgement.

that penderecki piece is atonal by itself, you said it, the theme here is something like: oh well the bomb & then burning to death. And I think that happening is captured pretty well, with my uneducated guess. Aphex's rework was done so delicately, so much with respect to the original, that it wasn't just turned into 'the aphex thing'. It was emphasizing the right spots, and together with the visuals, you were not supposed to feel comfy, you were supposed to shit your pants. It did what music normally does: enters your limbic system like a Sci-fi B movie Mindpolice and is having a party.

so no new tracks, just reworks of old, and a collab with an orchestra?

Or one rework of old and 4 new tracks. Depends if you feel like reading the thread or not.

Just few additional bits :).

1. Aphex was given flowers at the very end (a photo collage lowHQ in this Picasa album), he was frankly quite confused with these. But anyway also seemed to be quite happy showing thumbs up to the audience and then to the orchestra. When he was leaving a stage, he just gave the flowers to one of the choir ladies :).

2. I got some pictures of the English version of the symbols description - a main audio board guy was having these, but they are blurry, and the guy did not want to give his copy after the concert ('to keep some things a secret' as he said). But i managed to get a polish version of these from one of the musicians - will probably post some photos of it with a translation.

3. Full audio recording of the show is here(128kbps, mono mp3, taken directly from 16bits, 22050kHz raw PCM recording). Some parts are of surprisingly nice quality assuming taken with a crappy android cameraphone :).

My take on the tracklist:

00-33m - some random tracks, prior these recorded there was BOC, friend of mine reconigsed some Plaid, etc.

33m15s - It starts with Penderecki (“Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima” (1960–61))

44m30s - Then Aphex remix

51m40s - Another Aphex remix (or is it just a part of prior one?)

55m00s - Aphex & Penderecki together? (Penderecki, "Canon for Strings")

66m30s - Aphex set, track 1, Drukqz like

71m00s - Aphex set, track 2, Avril reprise ?

74m30s-90m00s - Aphex conducting orchestra (via visual symbols)

92m00s - Penderecki back on stage ("Polymorphia", )

103m00s - Penderecki switches with new conductor (Paul McCreesh?), and he plays with Aphex till the end of show ("Polymorphia Reloaded", 2011, world premiere)

112m15s - applause

Overall it seems it was quite an extraordinary type of the event last night. Looking forward to see him next Saturday (during Sacrum Profanum).

After listening to the mp3 (thank you tomaswoj !), I can spot what would 'sound-like' BOC, but I can't exactly make out the track. Could it be un-released? Can someone ID?

I really don't hear a rework of anything I know somebody said it was a remix of avril 14th I don't think so I think it is an original track.
