Co-operation of Krzysztof Penderecki, Aphex Twin and Jonny Greenwood is something unprecedented. Aphex Twin is a prominent figure of the contemporary electronic music; he’s the first techno artist whose works have been transcribed for orchestra and then performed in major concert halls all over the world (among others by London Sinfonietta and Alarm Will Sound). Jonny Greenwood, guitarist of Radiohead and a composer well acquainted with ‘classic’ instrumentarium, manifests his attachment to Penderecki’s music.

The programme of two concerts in Wrocław includes three compositions by Penderecki: “Polymorphia for strings”, “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima” and “Canon for strings”. All these works, written for strings (in the latter case, for strings and tape delay), come from 1960-1962, the avant-garde years of the composer’s life. Both Aphex Twin and Jonny Greenwood will invoke just that period in their music. “Polymorphia” – performed for the first time 50 years ago – has become their source of inspiration. Aphex Twin is composing “Polymorphia Reloaded” while Jonny Greenwood - “48 Responses to Polymorphia”; both compositions will have their world premiere in Wrocław.

“Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima” has been chosen mainly because of its relations with Jonny Greenwood’s “Popcorn Superhet Receiver” (inspired by Penderecki’s music) and the Aphex Twin’s decision to remix just that piece by the Polish composer. Concerts will be supplemented with Penderecki’s “Canon” for 52 strings and tape delay, two sets by Aphex Twin, and a piece from the Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack “There Will be blood."

PROGRAMME OF THE SEPTEMBER 10 CONCERT

as usual, i'm nowhere near this "concert" and i'm afraid to get my hopes up for anything better than a shitty cameraphone recording

If you had 30 thousand dollars I am sure he would play in your back garden. Best start saving!

I will be there with my crappy cameraphone, possibly taking a crappy 44kHZ mono/WAV recording of it :)

I will also be on SacrumProfanum, just the very next Sunday in Cracow, Poland, where mr. James will give some interpretations of Steve Reich's minimalistic compositions...

It is a good year for Aphex fans in Poland. As it was 2009 :). After years of being isolated PL is becoming an attractive direction for many artists.

I might do this for my 50th. Given that i haven't celebrated a birthday since i was about 18 (no really), it might be nice to blow some cash on a decent do at least once every half century.

Problem is, that you need the whole rephlex showcase. Well if you could call that a problem. Also, there's no guarantee that rdj would still be playing music out. Or amusingly, he could have gotten so massively popular, that a low rent douche like me couldn't afford, the gig, let alone the rider and the first class private jet seats.

From the article in the other thread (this Polish interview) an interesting bit is:

Q: You were one of the first techno producers being interpreted by symphony orchestra: London Sinfonietta or Alarm Will Sound. What do you think about these interpretations?

A: Some of them are quite good. In Poland I will work directly with the orchestra, so I am convinced that the end effect will be good. On the previous interpretations of my works I often had no influence.

(...)

Q: In that case, is the reworking of Penderecki's 40 years old composition a simple solution? A more natural, from the techno music perspective, is probably Steve Reich, that you will play this year on Sacrum Profanum (ed. 17.09.2011, Cracow, Poland)?

A:Maybe. However there were quite interesting reactions of my mates, who heard I'm going to rework "Polimorfia". "Wow, Penderecki!" - they usually said - "That's great!". I had no idea, that so many of my friends love his compositions. Yeah, it might be due to fact, they simply remembered them from Kubrick's "Shining" movie soundtrack, but this is something anyway.

So it might be something really, to be there these days (Wroclaw and Krakow) :).
