A good Tetris client

Yesterday I discovered that Lockjaw, the Tetris client I have been using for over three months, is a trojan. It has been using my connection to contact Russia for unknown, probably harmful reasons.

As someone who is heavily addicted to Tetris, I had this program open constantly. I would start games literally every other minute, or whenever I felt the urge. 0wn1ng aside, Lockjaw was an awesome Tetris client. The controls were perfectly smooth. All settings and gaming modes were completely changeable, the whole interface was versatile and easy to customize.

Now the lack of a good Tetris client has left a void in my life. Facebook has Tetris Friends, but the controls are deliberately unpleasant, and you have to watch adverts to make money for their bastardized company. I found a handheld Brick Game in my bedroom, but it's very primitive, and requires batteries etc.

I need you, WATMM. I need a good, safe Tetris client, with as many of these hit points as possible:

  • Free to download and use (open source or not)
  • Fluid Controls
  • As customizable as possible. Controls, gaming modes, sound and graphics should all be changeable
  • Ability to take screenshots or provide other evidence of high scores
  • Lightweight, doesn't use too much CPU
  • NO VIRUSES

+1 million internets for anyone who can help. I would greatly appreciate it. As a redeeming quality for this thread, let us discuss gaming software in general. Where to get the best clients, which games are the best, avoiding malware etc.

Try http://www.tetrisfriends.com/ without the facebook? Loved it when I was addicted. Still love tetris but can't handle the side effect of seeing the god damn shapes whenever I close my eyes.

I have some high scores there, but at the end of the day it's just the same problem as Facebook - it makes you watch real adverts, and the controls are made to be hard to use. The idea is that you pay them real money to 'earn' better (usable) controls. I don't want to be involved in a money-making shitropolis, I just want to play a good version of Tetris.

Ok I didn't know, last time I used it there were no adverts or Zynga-style money schemes. Most tetris clones suck unfortunately.

http://gewaltig.net/ OK if you can handle the neon graphics and no hold function.

http://en.tetrinet.no/blocktrix-page-7.php purported multiplayer classic with some cool features.

http://code.google.com/p/nullpomino/ this one seems actually decent but I haven't tried it, based on the grand master series

Thank you very much. I tried all three of these.

Cultris was the best one, but its single player interface is very limited. Also, sometimes the command to drop a piece carries over to the next piece, which can ruin a game.

I couldn't figure out how to use Blocktrix. It appears to be strictly multiplayer.

Finally, Nullpomino was customizable, had good graphics, and had many different modes of play. But there was one glaring feature that made it unusable: there is a slight pause after every piece is dropped, which makes it impossible to play at any kind of decent speed.

I will continue my search for the right Tetris client. Any more help in finding one would be much appreciated.

same here, it's fucking intense watching entire games unfold as soon as you shut your eyelids.

Neat! Cultris also has music by me (Lackluster) and Konsta Mikkonen (you might know of him via Hospital Records and their podcast, he releases drum'n'bass as Muffler) and many, many others related to the demoscene and the netlabel scenes of this planet.

That's awesome! Muffler literally singlehandedly got me into drum and bass when destroyer.net played his tune Embrace a nice summer day back in 2005. It was a transcendental experience.

^i feel like you could put together a pretty good music comp if you just took a bunch of random silent 35 second clips from games with that graphic style & got people to make up music + sound fx that went along with it.

also the clip juiceiuj posted of acid tetris is like my entire aesthetic influence summed up in one video

Used to play a game like that years ago when I was very young, on my grandfather's Macintosh, I think. Late 80's/early 90's. Was fun, but I was terrible at it.

Welltris looks interesting but that wasn't it. It was definitely much closer to the Hexahedra look, 3D blocks, more colorful. I think it was top down view only, Hex is showing the view as changeable which I don't remember at all (it has been ~25 years though so who knows, especially with my memory...)
