XI year old Autechre Album Released: Exai (WARP234)

comparing this release to what we normally expect from a double album seems to me that it may be, along with quite premature, off base entirely. even an IDM vet like RDJ did a double album basically adhering to the rock/mainstream concepts of such a thing: lots of variation in song style and structure to 'keep it interesting' with a nice intro piece to start the first album, a catcher of a first track for the second album, a nice soft pretty outro piece for the last track on the album preceded by an 'epic' track or two...i'm generalizing like a mofo but i think you may get the idea.

but what i'm saying is i don't think AE are going to approach a double album quite like that. i think this might be closer to Quaristice/Versions/Quadrange in tone of material than Drukqs or whatever else. they probably just had a lot of tracks that they though would work as an album, it just happened to be more than and hour and eighteen minutes or whatever.

as others have noted there is no distinction of 'disc 1, disc 2' or even with something like EP7 where there was a definite split of EP7.1 and EP7.2...this is being presented (from what we know now at least) as one whole album, one which just happens to run over the 'normal' time limits of an album. and further i don't think there will necessarily be any bullshit filler, otherwise they certainly could've added even more tracks...they're over 30 minutes away from running over time for 'filling' two compact discs.

In-depth analysis on what the tracknames might mean/refer to:

1. FLeure

At first glance you might think "Autechre naming a track simply 'flower'? That's very pretty! I'm feeling all kinds of fuzzy inside." Wrong! Ae sometimes refer to obscure shit. One can be pretty sure that the capitalized FL refers to a relatively unknown program they use to make their music, named Fruity Loops.

2. irlite (get 0)

According to google: "IRLite is a tool by Tony Marona that converts AMX IRL (IR Library) to a .text file that contains hex (pronto) codes". With the 'get 0' part, ae asks to get 0 copies of that program. It's an anti-advertisement saying you shouldn't use it, perhaps ruining Tony's program career this way. Not sure if that's legal.

03. prac-f

Yeah, I didn't watch the video either. Let's assume the answer is in there and that we won't under stand it/it's about voodoo magic.

If that quote isn't IDM then the genre is truly dead.

08. tuinorizn

"Tuin" is Dutch for garden, and by my guessing "orizn" means "you try and pull something out of your ass for this one" in ancient Aramaic.

Or perhaps the tracknames don't really mean anything at all. Huh. How about that.

..."To say Exai is a divisive album is (while in line with the effervescent and murky lore Brown/Booth) an understatement. Repeated listens continue to reveal a strange anthropology — here, the footprint of the duo's explorations are front and center, and yet all signifiers dissolve once again. I have to ask myself, what is the strategy, the recourse, and the terrain for Exai?

For the listener it's a familiar engagement with recurrent rewards. But something doesn't feel right here. While Exai is Autechre's celebrated 11th release, it leaves the imprint of something more immediate, less formal. Are we finally given entrance to Booth and Brown's own acknowledgement of their career or is Exai's fruit simply a redefinition of the accidental artifact? Multiple listens continue to reveal a reinvestigation of the nature of "mistake," but what would have been a deliberate "glitch" for 2001, is an immediate flourish tinged with calculated nostalgia. One only they could pull off."

I dug around a little bit and looks like promos went out with the year-end push. And lo and behold, seems like a review mix is out there! This looks like a snippet of vekoS!!!

Link to this quote before I believe anything you write, glotch. Google turned up nothing. Also I'm sure whats left of xltronic misses your pre release antics.

Edit: didn't even bother listening to the obviously fake "snippet."

I love how people with < 50 posts are telling ME what's up.

Whatever. This is real guys. Sisson knows whats up.

It's not like 650 is much better. Plus you know me from xltronic where I have around 4k, even if you pretend you don't. Nice try with the review though ;)

Patrick Sisson is a well known reviewer to anyone who read Pitchfork when it was a print zine previous to being on the web, not surprised AE would give the guy one of the early promo copies.

it's your loss if you don't want to hear the new snippet, which i must say is a true return to form. beautiful stuff

edit: clearly it's not a gl0tch track since it sounds very much like 'queersauce' (mike's words not mine) take it with a 'grain of salt' but it's the real deal

Thanks for putting the matter to rest, I'm sure it's completely legitimate.

I actually don't know what to think of the track. Like Awepitttance said, this is def in the vein of Queersauce, but different. Makes sense in light of the album art actually.

Anyways, there's plenty of private circles online for the oldschool guard, early traders. I'm pretty sure his comments weren't part of an official review.

As for post count, sorry for stepping on your wolf paws, wolfslice.
