I'm abit saddened by the amount of people that torrented his albums in the first place.

It took for Aaron to tell us about his financial problems to get people to pay for his music. Possibly out of guilt.

Maybe if everyone had paid for his music in the first place, he would be in this mess.

Some of us did back in the day

Hahahaha, Snares had FIVE 303s? That's amazing

There was a competition back when he released "Filth" to win a 303 he used in the making of the album.

So I guess he once had 6!

When John Frusciante was inspired to make electronic music by VS and AFX and the like he bought 6- 202's so he could make one for each string of the guitar. Maybe that was the thought with the 6- 303's?

Either way, that's like $10k worth of 303's at nowadays market price. DAYUM!

Super sad he has to sell off his gear. It has to be something tax related at this point, and for quite a bit of fucking money. Poor dude.

Wonder how the taxes are in other countries? In Denmark it's around 40% + you have to pay for unemployment safety and something called work contribution which is around extra 2-4% depending on how much your salary is.

This also means (I think) that if you sell something on BC you have to pay 40%. I don't know if people really do that or not...

Not sure what I make of all this (the rights and wrongs), I could go into it but don't care to explain. Bought the Moonglow/This Bitter Earth a few weeks ago from Bandcamp, I don't mind VS but he's not really my cup of tea.

I guess It must be pretty embarrassing for him. Or perhaps it just speaks volumes on the state of the record industry and how...........arhhh anyway, can't be bothered with all that. You get the jist.

I bet he could rent out his studio to peeps for a fair bit of $$. So much gear porn! (if he hasn't already sold most of it.)

thats a great idea actually

indeed

breakcore dudes and electronic music heads the world over would flock to snares Winnipeg synth cave to make it go bleep wooooosh and swivilellytwerpdwang in that special custom 1176 way

thing is can he deal with the role of being an engineer for other folks music?

It might be a fun change of pace, and an excuse to remodel the bathroom, win win.

I think this would make him hate his fans even more

What did he say in the interview that pissed people off? It was no ruder than your garden variety Autechre interview circa 2003. He cares deeply about his work, was able to live off it for a good while, and is confronted with a world that increasingly forces you to be a whore. The guy turned 40 this year, cut him some slack.

The attitude that he owes something to his loyal nerd fans is obnoxious. It must be frustrating creating such masterful, tasteful music and then be mostly associated with manchildren who are most excited when unboxing computer accessories. There's probably a pretty big disconnect between his lifestyle and most of his fans'.

Usually I can get behind the schadenfreude but the only thing I can see that the guy has done "wrong" is splurged on a bunch of fancy music gear, and that's just jealousy - I'd do the same thing if I had the money and could justify it (i.e. if music was my career).

I hope things look up for him. That would give more me hope for humanity.

lol im just gonna say im not the biggest fan of this guy but yeah that interview is being blown way out of proportion. i was pretty curious since alot of people brought it up in this thread and after i read it i was like " wait this is what people are getting in a fuss about? it's like every other rdj/ae interview i've read" sure he kinda comes across as a dick but i think it's pretty common for people that go from making music in their bedroom and then all of a sudden they have a fanbase. sad he has to sell gear now, like i said not a fan of his but still think he certainly has talent.

also it's not like he set up a fucking kickstarter to get money, he just directed people to his bandcamp.

Well yeah not now that he needs em to pay his taxes.

In his Facebook 13th of August he posted the fact mag article with the statement "I did 1 interview this time and then I stopped. This is it. I don't hate you. ". This was pre the plea.

I already gave my opinion on the interview in that other thread.

Well he did have a load of custom modular bits made for him recently that he showed off on Facebook. Perhaps their final bill showed up through the letterbox.

I'm glad he did the fact interview that way, another recmag dead pan monosyllabic interview would have sucked

Just to be clear here, and then we can stop the gear discussion. Most of his modular gear is custom made or made by a friend of his and even though it looks expensive I am pretty sure it's not compared to some of the pre-build manufactor modules people buy these days, also for me it doesn't look that bad considering he collected these things before the $$$ on gear rose up to the point of being collector items.

He made demo's and was even part of creating the module(s) for a manufactor and probably got some gear that way.

I don't see 5 eventides or something like that. It's his tools for god sake, back to the analogy, being a carpenter requires a hammer and a saw at least, no matter who your "boss" is.

To add I think some of the gear is not even working because he can't afford to fix it.

That interview is the best I have seen in years, im glad he spoke out his opinion of some topics.

It's his tools for god sake

These were my thoughts exactly throughout this whole discussion.

Those are the tools of his trade no different than a welder, pipefitter etc.
