I think for the next few years, we're going to see a lot of 'meh' smart phones because all these companies are busy looking for the next big thing.

And I don't mean the Apple iWatch.

It will be interesting to see if Apple bucks that trend next year - 10th anniversary of the iPhone - you know they're going to do something special to celebrate, and hopefully not just some exclusive colour or some shite like that.

'Ceramic White 10th Anniversary iPhone X - only 3500.00' Jony Ive can gush lovingly about it's manufacture in some soft-core product porn video.

Mobile phones have reached their peak - at this point, it will take something truly innovative to stir up the markets again. But, what if the mobile phone has become an appliance, something that first and foremost is meant to do tasks in a familiar way, thus sapping all the innovation from it by necessity of familiarity?

Next year will be OLED curved glass screen (no bezels), no home button and wireless charging - apparently according to some online sources.

"It's the best iPhone we've ever made.... until next year"

i doubt they'd change the form factor for an S version

itunes is running a lot smoother on my macbook pro now after installing sierra. bigger artwork in album view as well. still runs like shit on windows though, and looks completely different.

can also say, still NO ISSUES with this update on my macbook pro retina. NONE.

installing now with reckless abandon. no mac. no itunes. straight ota. looking forward to wiping out all of the useless apple apps cluttering up my phone. update finished. no brick. fucking stupid that now playing is on a separate "card" when you swipe up from the bottom now. there's plenty of room for it on the main "card"

Agreed on that - really annoying.

They'll certainly do a special phone next year.

Tim Cook will say "We couldn't be more excited blah, blah, blah"

Jonny Ive will have a video that begins "With the iPhone 8, we've strived to fuse form with function and create something that is truly magical. A device that represents the marriage between our design ethos of simplicity and... blah, blah."

A couple of random software developers will take the stage to promote games no-one gives a shit about.

A new team of fifty people will be working on the new emojis for iOS 11.

Someone like Drake will close out the show.

How big is your interval, guys, before changing a phone again?

Every two years thanks to Apple

Agreed they need to mix up their keynotes - they are bordering on the predictable - not only with the format, but what is shown.

They do need to freshen things up a bit but they probably don't see the need to fix what isn't broken.

Don't know how true it is but I read somewhere that more people watched that recent keynote than watched the 2016 Super Bowl.

Maybe they'll do like Windows and Samsung and skip version numbers at their whims and call it the iPhone 10!

I really think they will... or drop the numbers altogether like they did with the iPad and then you won't know what fucking model you have.

You know what I really want them to drop (although they never will) is the "i" moniker from iTunes, iPhone, iPad, all that shit - just call it what it is: Apple Phone, Apple Watch, Apple Pad, etc.

The fake, phoney attitude towards paying their taxes. Just because you found some legal loop-hole don't mean you're acting with any degree of ethical responsibility. just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should.

Maybe Tim will announce their new found moral 'courage' next year as a 'One More Thing' type moment.

Tell that to all the other companies that do it day in and out. Apple's just being targeted because they're big. They didn't get big due to tax evasion though.

True, but it helped. And that small percentage compounded over years, which also of course helps when reporting numbers to stockholders, really adds up. Not specifically Apple (though they are certainly guilty) but many large corps are doing this. Terrible situation that really should be fixed.

But I do think they tried to drop the 'i-' stuff with some products a few years ago, the TV (maybe?) and something else if I'm not mistaken, but it didn't catch on. No way can they do it now with the iPhone being as iconic as it is. One day, when they get passed the phase they're in...maybe.

Agreed. They're all just as guilty but when you're at the top of the heap, I think you set an example.

I think what bothers me about it is that I just wish they'd come out and say, "Okay, we're just a big, greedy corporation like everyone else" instead of hiding beyond their slogans and somehow trying to project the image that they are some kind of technological equivalent of Disney. And the CEO banging on about gay rights and other social issues.

On the one hand, I applaud them for those things but the cynical side of me says it's all a lightshow to deflect attention away from the fact that they are just a business totally driven by greed.

This thread really is gone bad if you're defending tax fraud. Whataboutry is not an excuse for anything.

Still, the thread is about criticising the phones design, not Apples dodgy tax returns.

Yeah, sorry. I derailed it a bit.

Back to the iPhone 7.

Oh, I'm not defending them in the least - I agree they should pay what they owe, and do what's morally right - my point was they are just the target du jour because of how big they are. The weekly news could have an article about the latest company found doing the same.

I wonder how long the Apple empire will last? Back in the 90s, they were a laughing stock. MS were the kings.

History has a funny way of cycling and those at the top can find themselves back at the bottom almost over night (especially in the tech industry).

I really believe all these big tech companies are privately funnelling trillions of dollars into R&D looking for the next thing that will become the device to own in the coming decades.

The problem for Apple and other big tech firms is that a complete unknown group of individuals figure it out first.
