I normally find cult leaders and cults in general pretty fascinating, and maybe it was the way in which it's presented, but there didn't seem to be much in the way of backstory or even half baked philosophy behind any of it, just a karen who likes to drink and be the center of attention and a small flock of heads glorifying her slow mo trainwreck. If anything Mike was the one who saw the writing on the wall and skipped town before shit hit the fan. A dick move to grab the cash, but I can't say I wouldn't have done the same in his place. I felt sorry for the old lady, she just seemed to be in her own world most of the time just chillin, i wonder if she's still with them.

yeah watched 2/3 of this so far, probably will finish it but overall quite boring. I feel like half the people on the doc are faking "believing" in anything just to avoid any kind of punishment.

I love Werner Herzog's documentaries, due for a re-watch of those. This moment with the deranged penguin from Encounters at the End of the World is one of my favorite moments from those.

Yeah that's a classic. I watched that documentary years and years ago, and that scene really put a hook in me.

He is the master of capturing incredible moments. One of my favorites Herzog moments is the deaf/blind man finding the tree in Land of Silence and Darkness. That movie is incredible.

This was pretty much people dunking on what a douchebag Bob Guccione was from start to finish, even from his own kids. The only real empathy for the guy came from models & porn stars that got their start in Penthouse, and the few Village Voice free speech type journalists who championed him. He did try to help rid America of its Victorian era sex shame complex, as did Larry Flynt. A lot of similarities to Trump.
