I think Future Gibbon off FMWT is often overlooked.

Like vic acid I think it's an awesome idea and extremely well executed.....

FMWT is one of my top 3 albums from him. Vic Acid is a great EP too.

Numbers Lucent needs more love. That's a fantastic little EP.

agreed!

are you the same xyrofen from youtube?

I've been following your channel forever, you've exposed me to some cool music dude.

That is me. Always cool to see people that recognize me.

This can't be said enough.

I think Arterial Fantasy is in my top 10 of most played tracks on last.fm. The whole EP is just amazing.

Arterial Fantasy is probably the most hardcore track on that EP in classic 'pusher terms. yeah Illegal Dustbin is noisier but it's not as much of a brainfuck. I like Paradise Garage best though.

Illegal Dustbin is easily my least favorite (and was for some reason the promo track?). I personally love Zounds Perspex and Heliacal Torch. Paradise Garage is up there too.

Guest cult fiction

Underrated: Hello Everything, which gets a ton of hate from the SP sucks post-2004 crowd, but it's probably my 2nd favorite after Go Plastic... so many amazing and beautiful tracks, 'Rotate Electrolyte' especially destroys me every time.

Overrated: Ultravisitor, has always sounded cheesy to me.

That Sound On Sound interview was also interesting because he challenges the bias people have against strong musicianship. I mean, I think that Solo Electric Bass album is not very exciting because it sounds really quiet and a bass solo without the context of a track is pointless to me. But when he wolfs the fuck out on a bass in his tracks like My Sound, or Papalon, or that funky riff at the beginning of Endless Night, it's totally sweet. Virtuosity is awesome when it's put to use in a good way. I don't see how the wanky parts of Ultravisitor make the KILLER parts any less killer. Many of the highs of Squarepusher's musical career are on that album.

Good chops on the bass add another level of nuance to his music that a less skilled bass player wouldn't have a chance of contributing. Be glad he can play like that and chooses to make cool shit rather than bland weather channel music. Bring the FUNK and the BEATS.

THANK U

also how can you not play airbassguitar when you put on go plastic an hear the first track

no basswank, no squarepusher

The wanky bits of Ultravisitor just make Ultravisitor an uneven album. And I don't have a problem with excellent chops, I just think, say, An Arched Pathway is really compositionally/emotionally shallow. A strong riff exquisitly played !basswank; a shitty "look at me" showcase like An Arched Pathway = basswank.

I get that Ultravisitor is meant to replicate a live and organic performance (although it feels artificial because it's not really live), but I don't think it's completely successful.

I love a lot of Tom's basswork. A whole lot of it.

I wasn't so much interested in the basswork off Ultravisitor as I was songs like Menelec, 50 cycles, steinbolt, tetra sync, etc. Those experimental, electronic, rape your ears with incredible programming and 91234910245908239081903450193482 BPM parts was what I liked.

Of course some of the bass pieces are pure wank, and more or less useless, I think of Telluric Piece and An Arched Pathaway.

But c'mon ! I Fulcrum is a nice transition after the masterpiece that Ultravisitor is, Andrei is a beautiful track, C-Town Smash is funky as hell…

I think that Ultravisitor is Jenkinson's only jazz album. Forget MIRON and SEB : Ultravisitor is THE jazz album, free, violent and beautiful (yes, I really love that one album

I think of Hard Normal Daddy as reflecting more of the jazz sensibilities than any other album. That and Music is Rotted One Note... ?

HND is kind of more pornofusion than Jazz with a capital J.

lol yeah this.

But he's right. I don't mean Jazz as in a "classic" drums/bass/guitar/keys configuration randomly playing at high speed (don't get me wrong, I love that kind of jazz), but as in freedom in the music form and in its expression.

Guest CraniumXII

Definitely not underrated in my book. "Venus No. 17" EP is one of my all time favorites. Still not sure with of the two Venus tracks is more brutal.

I think Orient Orange is incredible, i wish he did more music like this.

And Hello Everything, Selection Sixteen, Numbers Lucent. I love Anstromm-Feck 4 too.

Overrated would be Go Plastic, Feed me Weird Things, Hard Normal Daddy., Ultravisitor.

I want to like Go Plastic, find it as amazing as I think I should find it, but every time it never clicks.

Same here, really like Orient Orange. Is it supposed to be about Agent Orange, the defoliant they used in Vietnam? Or is that connection obvious...?

After reading the thread, I'd say Square Window may be underrated. What a beautiful track : amazing melodies and synths.

Chassis posted Whooshki earlier in the thread. I don't think it's underrated, just obscure/unknown. I discovered that track thanks to WATMM some months ago, I wouldn't have learnt about its existence elsewhere I guess. I'm glad I bought a copy on discog : well worth the 30€, one of the most obsessing piece of music I know. I love when SP does those tracks based on a quite simple yet beautiful acidey melody with glide and reverb, looping over and over again.
