this was a good read, thanks for linking. in the translation a lot of the responses sentences repeated a few times so kinda like some AE vibes interjected by the tech there lol

me the entire read:

So the question arises: what is this "Free Jazz Guy" doing today? Probably doesn't exist. Fortunately, today's kids don't need to hear that anymore: they check something online and don't need the wisdom of these shop geniuses. So the question arises: what is this "Free Jazz Guy" doing today? Probably doesn't exist. Fortunately, today's kids don't need to hear that anymore: they check something online and don't need the wisdom of these shop geniuses. So the question arises: what is this "Free Jazz Guy" doing today? Probably doesn't exist.

this made me laugh for some reason. repetition is useful.

edit: and yeah.. repeated responses. leave them in!

I've made what has turned out to be an excellent room recording of Sydney (August 28 2023). I will share it tomorrow somehow. Where do people tend to host these files, even if initially only? The mp3 is 173 MB.

great, excited to hear it. https://wetransfer.com works well and can handle up to 2gb for free so a flac or wav can fit as well.

i believe you can upload it here to the files section or whatever it's called, but if possible upload the .wav at some point! i'd also suggest backing up to archive.org which has a pretty strong AE bootleg collection.

sydney set was wild. insane rhythms. loads of grime. some extended bits that sounded like vocal samples (but could have been anything, honestly). sounded at least as good as the recent ae_live 2022 releases, maybe better, and substantially new material.

I swear I heard bits of MCR Quarter in there. but yeah, it was incredible. first half was practically a hiphop DJ set w 'scratching', second half was high-speed bangerz. I'm told this was similar to the "London B" set, I don't really know what that means exactly cos I haven't heard the latest livesets but I'm about to grab them.

Yeah Sydney is appearently almost all new material, second half of London B and like 40 mins of new shit. Some of it is modified versions of the patches Sean posted last year. It also somewhat feels like it gets increasingly faster, by the end its just rattling. Some of the fastest stuff Ive heard of them since like Cap.iv

yes! I liked the high-bpm action.

I just scoped a bit of the London B set and yeah, there are differences. I really hope we get a soundboard of this set.

Okay, coming up is the mp3 of my Sydney room recording. I'm using WeTransfer for now (link expires in 7 days from now) just to get it to you. I'll sort out WAV/FLAC and/or archive.org in next few days. Thanks for the suggestions.

Great recording, thanks for that.

interesting how different it sounds when you aren't feeling it through your whole body. Feeling the bass was such a big part of the experience, I'm getting the feeling that a lot of what we heard last night was actually bass frequencies below the audible spectrum that we could feel only through our bodies, is that a thing?

I haven't heard the set, but I would believe this. I've noticed more and more very low sub frequencies in their music, mostly in kick drums I guess but yeah, it's all over the other sets too. It's kinda unsettling in a way, and I've suspected that there's an aspect of it I'm missing by having it confined to headphones instead of a big system/good listening space, and that it's meant to be felt.

wow. 28 ish minutes in is amazing. i hope we get the board recordings of these australia set. this stuff is really good. like proper head nodders and DSP.  sheesh. epic. it's 5am in the b-room and a whole bunch of people just had their night made. i'm giddy.

the other sets are also amazing. been playing them non-stop but this set is a different vibe in the 2nd half.  it's like getting a bunch of autechre albums.

edit: jfc.  i'm overcaffenated and devastated.. in a good way like when you drink the best drink in the universe.

Sydney set is sounding quite a bit harder than the Melbourne one, having attended the latter. Maybe that's down to the nature of the events. The Melbourne event (Now or Never) struck me as an AV-technology showcase and Ae's set seems to have had more sublime variations and ineffable transitions. Whereas the Sydney event (Switched On) seemed more generalised to contemporary electronic music, and their set there is sounding more industrial, more rhythmically simple, but much more of a banger start-to-finish with clear transitions between different phases. Really do hope they release the recordings from both as they are totally different, but both awesome for completely different reasons.

And yeah, it's really difficult to capture how much inaudible / sub-bass fuckery was going on with these shows, at least the Melbourne one. Definitely felt it through my body at the gig, and not just because the floor was vibrating. An all-over electrifying tingle head-to-toe.  There is something seriously ineffable going on with their live shows that I haven't experienced elsewhere.

Yes you definitely feel the lowest bass way more in your body when it's at that volume level, to the extent I can hear the tonalities of the basslines clearer in the recording than I did live; because live, they're kind of obscured by the physical walloping. That said, I thought this was a pretty bassy recording :)  I eq'd the top up some towards a more traditionally listenable balance, but I didn't touch the bottom.

Overall, yes it is the feeling of all the pressures on and in your body that is the biggest difference between live and playing back a recording. Though on big speakers and up load, if the bass is in the recording, you can start moving back in that direction. You're just not going to achieve live venue levels in your house.
