How one ambient artist can stand out over another, I'm not sure. Why Andy Stott gets so much praise, you've fucking got me on that one. I like a lot of it but it's almost against the nature of the genre to have something stand out over another. I mean if somethings grabbing you, it's so individual and unique to each listener via the element somewhere in the mash that's doing it.

Bersarin Quartett is amazing. Is anyone familiar with the solo works of Jean-Michel or Thomas Bücker?

Still loving A Winged Victory for the Sullen btw.

I saw them on their 2011 tour. Pretty remarkable.

I was thinking this about some of the really minimal drone ambient that I like. Two that I keep coming back to are Stephan Mathieau - Remain, and a newish Kevin Drumm album, Tannenbaum. But they're both just these long continuous tones with very minor variation. Sounds like anyone could do it.

I dont consider Andy Stott ambient, but I agree that I'm not crazy about his new sludgy direction. His techno of a few years ago is still quite good.

I suppose it depends on how you define ambient really. But it's not that difficult to see that someone like Pete Namlook (I've been listening to his Silence series a lot lately) is worlds away from say, Oren Ambarchi (whose record from last year "Sagittarian Domain" is fucking massive, by the way).

Yeah I mean there's so many different styles and vibes with ambient music. Beyond that, some artists just stand out by their production, where the elements in a Carbon Based Lifeforms song, for example, sound cheap. Biosphere sounds nothing like Taylor Deupree, for instance, even in mood. Different approaches in sound design, composition, etc., just like any genre.

btw what's the best album by celer, iyo?

Engaged Touches (especially the expanded version) and An Immensity Merely To Save Life are great. You can check it all out here:

Also, not enough for love for the 12k Label on WATMM:

wow, I'm loving this label.

TWELVE PRINCIPLES UPON WHICH 12K WAS FOUNDED:

1. Don't tell listeners what they want to hear, let them discover that for themselves.

2. Treat your audience as they are: intelligent, passionate lovers of art and sound.

3. Evolve constantly, but slowly.

4. Stay quiet, stay small.

5. Strive for timelessness.

6. Never try to be perfect. Beauty is imperfection.

7. Simplicity. Anti-Design.

8. Never try to innovate, be true to yourself, and innovation may happen.

9. Explore sound as art, as a physical phenomenon — with emotion.

10. Develop community.

11. Be spontaneous.

12. Everything will change.

Same. I've been familiar with the label for years, and have enjoyed releases here and there, but I didn't really "get" most of it till last year, especially Taylor Deupree's work.

I just discovered the 12k label a few days ago thanks to this thread. So much great music! It's really exciting. Just wanted to say thanks to Tauhid for that post. I've been away from ambient music for a couple of years, and this label has really reminded me how amazing it can be.

He knows his way around his loops, that's for sure.

I haven't heard Hakobune before. That is some tasty guitar treatment!

A lesser known gem that I keep playing. Ambient guitar as well, not really as processed as the track you posted.

Jeff Pearce is another great ambient guitarist. Here is a collaboration of his with probably my favourite ambient artist of all time, vidnaObmana.
