^weird audio phasing issues in that video they play around the 10-13 min mark. plane is interesting tho but i'm no aeronerd. 10 year old me would've been all over it

 

this line of thinking with the universal pressure / cosmic voids thing potentially negating dark energy's silliness is interesting.

your reminder that the average young American (these are almost certainly all college kids, btw. they're 'smart' enough and old enough to have been enrolled in a college) is beyond ignorant of the world'a place in the universe.

this is one of the cringiest Veritasium videos (and that's saying something) but nonetheless felt worth sharing for just how fucking wild this was to see. really hard to fathom millions, billions of people walking around their whole lives with just no idea that our own moon is smaller than a star, or think 'yeah, the sun is probably like idk 8 times bigger than Earth?'

Large crystals are extremely rare in metals, and in meteors they occur from extremely slow cooling from a molten state in the vacuum of space when the solar system first formed. Once in the solid state, the slow cooling then allows the solid solution to precipitate a separate phase that grows within the crystal lattice, which form at very specific angles that are determined by the lattice. In meteors, these interstitial defects can grow large enough to fill the entire crystal with needle or ribbon-like structures easily visible to the naked eye, almost entirely consuming the original lattice. They consist of a fine interleaving of kamacite and taenite bands or ribbons called lamellae. Commonly, in gaps between the lamellae, a fine-grained mixture of kamacite and taenite called plessite can be found.

superheavy (the stage 1 booster part) came down HARD, about 34 min in the video Rubin posted. Engines didn't re-light properly and it hit the ocean at 1000kmph, transmitting video all the way down

edit: apparently automatically self destructed at 1km above ocean

NASA updated Voyager 1's memory system to circumvent a broken chip. Pretty nuts how they can keep reviving this thing.
