Animal Collective - Painting With

My concern is that I like this album so much right off the bat that I'm going to be burnt out on it within a month, whereas Centipede HZ is still like a new album to me. At least, that would be my concern if I had one.

I'm not digging the sound of this album at all. The melodies are quite nice and what not, but damn, those synths are not the musics I was looking for.

Not loving this, I think the worst thing for me is how shallow I find it, Merriweather onwards their sound is more synthetic but the real reason I loved Centipede Hz is how deeply emotionally intense it is compared to their previous output. This is just throwaway and lacks weight and any spark of sincerity for me. The repeated refrains of 'the parking lot' and 'burglarrr' in some of the tracks are annoying and i don't expect the songs to have any longevity. They sound at worst b sides, but then Faces in a Crowd from the Panda Bear Noah ep i think is lush, it's allowed to breathe which these songs aren't. I think the band forcing themselves into creating short pop songs was a bad idea for any variety on the album, even just an instrumental, something to play out longer, something approaching unpredictable, which is what defines early Animal Collective.

On Delay is maybe my favourite track on here, though the album does sound like something from Sonic 3 or Sonic Rush, I'm having flashbacks to being stuck on Carnival Night on that spinning cylinder not knowing whether to press up or down and when/if to jump..

I find the Centipede Hz bashing quite hard to take as I found that album phenomenal, and as it seems a lot of the music I engage with most is best played in pitch darkness very loud because of how dense and in this case densely saturated it is that it requires you to relish that and absorb it. And it's the way that at first it was such a harsh contrast to the more hypnotic Merriweather that i found it a mess, and then gradually the melodies started to reveal themselves. I think it's a masterpiece and I've only come out of wattm retirement to defend it. Listening to it again after Painting With, it's so much meatier and solid, it's the way the album keeps revealing more of it's soul, beneath the confectionery of sounds lies a deep passion,Today's Supernatural went from sounding like vomit to somehow being really moving when it reaches 2:00. Still, now, the vocals are just aching enough to move me. It can't be just me.

I can't comprehend anyone not liking New Town Burnout, (2:54 oh my) or not having an aural orgasm at the opening of Monkey Riches, or not flipping out over the vocals of Wide Eyed after the immense build up, or not finding Amanita epic and the way it evolves incredibly euphoric and transcendent and such an exhausting dramatic end. I was amazed, and didn't think they could possibly top it. It's just a shame they haven't tried, a few more albums and people will appreciate Centipede Hz for the masterpiece it is. Unfortunately I have to consider all opinions from those who bash it as void, and only redemption lies in listening to it properly and recognising its brilliance. Start with New Town Burnout; it is fucking amazing, it is on that album, ergo that album can't be bad.

I can't disagree with a lot of that except for wide eyed. not really a fan of that at all and it seems to stick out like a sore thumb.

feels and sung tongs are incredible albums. I like them both more than strawberry jam.

Animal Collective reminds me of the days of yesteryear when tons of indie bands had vocalists who either sounded like shrill carnival barkers or like Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys because "omg Pet Sounds" and now there is none of that and what is an indie band these days?

Remember all these bands?

Wolf Parade

Sunset Rubdown

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!

Annuals

The New Pornographers

Hot Hot Heat

Tapes n' Tapes

The Unicorns

Islands

The Hold Steady

British Sea Power

etc.

Things done changed. What has happened to our lives. It is shifting like layers of sand on a volcanic beach during monsoon season mixed with my tears. The subway she is a porno, my brain is the cliff and my heart is the bitter buffalo, etc.

Many of those remind me of the time every new indie band tried to sound like Modest Mouse.

Were New Pornographers good? I'm going to be playing a show next month with someone from that band (like, not WITH them, just sharing the stage on the same night, different time). I'm hoping to check out some of their albums beforehand. I always heard the name, but never heard the music.

Hot Hot Heat were from my town. I wasn't a big fan of their music, but was super impressed with their work ethic. Those guys knew how to keep the momentum going.

Now that the hype has passed and I can listen to this for what it is I gotta say it's a great album... will expand on that soon

yes. have been listening fairly regularly, it's pretty poppy. but still quite adventurous. i live the vocal doubling thing that was developed on from the last panda bear album, works really well on here. plus it's just a great pop album, focus on the happy vibes ffs. it's not hard u cunts. ffs. (sorry am drunk)

Still think the first Hot Hot Heat album is brilliant, and still fresh to me. It's very distinctive. Also really like their second album.

Painting With got pretty stale pretty fast for me. def due to the sameyness and pace of the album. but they have 2 shows from their fall tour on their band camp and man, live, all those songs have such life. the transitions are killer. really good shit. just when i think they lost a step...
