Thanks for posting this, enjoyable listen. And yes, there is something mesmerizing about Reznor's dulcet tone.

I'm gonna go grab this on vinyl at some point the week. Enough of the tracks caught my ear and grew on me. At first I was appalled at the few singles that leaked both by legit release or live but the album in a whole has enough solid tracks to warrant a purchase. I also feel bad for pirating every NIN album since The Fragile, tho I do own almost every single Halo up until that point.

lol

i find it mesmerizing how humorless he sounds when speaking, he has such an overly serious tone of his voice it's weirding me out. I think the guy could use a little bit of recreational drug use, he doesn't seem any happier after obtaining his double D hot gf

Or, he was just bored with the interview like most artists are who have to endlessly promote their music.

I really don't get it. I think the mastering on the 'loudness war' version sounds fucking perfect. Are those guys only happy if there's NO compression used at all? That's fucking idiotic.

Compare it to some albums with a wide dynamic range and then you'll get it but as i've said earlier i think it was probably over-compressed during the mixing stage also so the alternate mastering wont help much.

The album could have easily be made to have dr of 10-12 dB and still to sound solid and punchy not like this p.of shit that it is now.

How much dynamic range are you expecting from a synthpop album though?

I'm mean reznor bought ssl duality 48 mixing console (about $250.000) + lots of high end out-board gear + for a studio + high end monitoring and converters = $500k - $1 million for what?! For this? what a waste!

but it seems like something he set up himself, no? I understood it as an official, from the NIN headquarters 'talk' about the album, not a press interview

It sounds polished (too much ???) in general, yes (when you invest so much money of course it is polished), but it's also over-compressed that it discords (not in a pleasant way) all the time and there's no life in the sound what so ever except from sudden bursts of volume but from a channel's fader automations only. It sounds tooo aggressive (the sound it self, not talking about the music) and unnecessarily squizzzzed beyond all limits. What about the sound should i like here? If you do that's ok, just i don't. I see how things could be better.

The good things about the sound are excellent spacing/panning and the polishedness sounds seductive if you're listening too much of indie music.

I dunno. Maybe I just like my music compressed. I like when it sounds like one unit (sounds influencing each other etc.) rather than having things sticking out. I'm guilty of chucking my own music through some fairly brutal compression at the mastering stage because it just sounds pleasant to my ears. I don't have everything pumping though, and I didn't hear any obvious ridiculousness in this album either. I guess that's what I'm trying to say. I'm listening with my ears and not with graphs.

I think this is actually a pretty good record. Much better than The Slip and Year Zero. Sounds like he has combined various elements from prior releases. I hear bits of With Teeth, the distorted elements of Year Zero, and some of the tinkering style from the Ghosts tracks. Once again, the lyrics don't do much for me, but the musical production is excellent. Plenty of catchy hooks which will keep me coming back to this record in the future.

edit: If you listen carefully, there are some musical segments that seem reminiscent of Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral. E.g. Satellite - the lyrics and the way they're sung sounds like it could have been something from the PHM era.
