Wow, here's the director's IMDB.

In Development:

1. The Black Hole (details only on IMDbPro)

2. Logan's Run (details only on IMDbPro)

3. Oblivion (details only on IMDbPro)

It looks like this is the guy you go to if you want a sci-fi remake.

*edit*

doesn't look artificial enough, but im still interested

Yeah. Judging off of the trailer, the costumes and scenery looked better in the original.

Hell yeah, I'm titillated. Ever since that concept trailer leaked a couple of years ago this has been on the radar.

Actually just forwarded this to a friend of mine who I thought would be stoked. He said he hadn't seen the original in, like, 20 years. For the record, watched the original about 5 years ago and found it to be 1 parts badass 1 parts cheese. Hoping for more exquisitely painful dialogue like:

YORI

How did you do that, Flynn?

FLYNN

(sitting up)

Elementary physics... a beam of

energy can always be diverted...

ooh, my head

(looks around --

to Yori)

Are we there yet, Mommy?

Aw yeah - I totally remember that from highschool physics, don't you?

oh my god this looks absolutely awful, they took everything good looking about the original and polished it till it had no soul. visually it looks far less interesting than the original film.

and that bit crusher burst in the trailer? wtf! daft punk you've outdone yourselves

Yeah. Judging off of the trailer, the costumes and scenery looked better in the original.

fuck the fuck off, i might as well say something equally as offensive. Star wars phantom menance looks far superior to return of the jedi an empire strikes back

i guess i'm in the minority being absolutely massively excited to see this. i think it looks like they've done a fantastic job with it.

i'd also urge everyone to keep in mind that this is not a remake. it's a sequel. at first, the newfangled recogniser and the new donut-style ID disc put me off a little... but then i remembered that computer technology has changed a lot in 30 years. and i don't mean from a VFX perspective, i mean that the world "inside the computer" would reflect those changes too.

the original tron very much LOOKS like the computers of that era suggest. this new one has the shiny polish and gloss that modern computers have. it's actually appropriate.

i think the glitchy score elements are fantastic. it might seem old hat to us as IDM fans, but speaking as a tv / film composer myself, it's GROUNDBREAKING to have that sort of thing in a major studio film. i have enough of a hard time getting directors to open their minds enough to use synths at all. granted, it only makes sense for this movie, but even Sci-Fi guys i deal with just want simple orchestral stuff... this is cool to see. although i still wish they would have gotten WC to do this one.

very psyched.

but you say this as if this was an intentional design aesthetic choice for that reason and not because they didn't want to alienate people from the movie. If it resembled the original Tron people would think it looks weird. why? because it doesnt have the sterile soulless look that the majority of CGI laden movies like this have, this resembles the new Speed Racer movie 2x more than Tron. The status quo is to make very banal looking design like this, if Tron the original had followed the status quo this much it wouldn't be the memorable awesome scifi movie that it is. this sequel will be a blip in comparison, and i think its because they werent risky enough and wanted to play it safe.

edit: plus i thought they were going inside the game of Tron, isn't it the same game? why would the computers 'look better' ? it doesnt make any sense

trust me, i'm as much disdainful of the overuse of CGI as the next guy... but what franchise can get away with it if not this one? it's the whole idea... to me, it just looks like the old 'tron' world with a 2010-era video card and updated models ( and some kind of atmospheric storms that i guess will be clarified later. ) in the original film, the 'computer world' was a paradigm for the real world in every sense... and this is similar, if you'd like to look at it that way. over-produced, over-processed, and focusing on the pretty and shallow. is that what they're intending here? who knows. maybe it's just going to be an SFX-fest like speed racer... you could be right... but i'm having a bit more faith.

at the end of the day, it's the story that's going to make or break this... and how they tie in the concepts / characters / design of the first one. the fact that bridges and boxleitner are both on board bodes well. this is disney, after all... GENERALLY speaking they take a little more pride in their output than your typical major studio.

also, the fact that they named it LEGACY indicates to me they realise they're dealing with something revered and classic.

i could be wrong, but i'm remaining uncharacteristically optimistic about this one.

fair enough, you're holding out hope it's going to be good. I can't deny you of that :emotawesomepm9:

one thing that seems odd about the trailer is it seems like its going for a distinctly dark and almost noirish tone to it, it kind of reminds me of Sky Captain of the world of tomorrow meets Bladerunner? if that makes any sense..

Speed Racer is under-rated

Speed Racer is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. A cult classic first off, and for me - a masterpiece of sorts.

All WATMM folk need to see the blue ray and ignore the fucking reviews entirely.

alongside Nashville and Inland Empire to be clear about my tastes
