The first time Ae sounds better on headphones. Those samples sounds perfect (having in mind compression and everything) on my AudioTechnica ATH-M50 phones...even better than on PMC TB2A speakers and that's really rare, not sure if it's a good thing but it's rare.

 

I almost 100% certain they have one of these phones:

 

- Sennheiser HD 650

- Beyerdynamic DT 880

- AudioTechnica ATH-M50

 

Yes, statistically these phones are the most used in pro audio world but...not everybody likes them.

 

Although ATH-M50 are closed-back design, DT 880 semi-open and HD 650 open design they all have very similar freq response...almost identical. The use of reverb makes me believe they use canes with closed-back design, maybe even Beyerdynamic DT770.

I found Oversteps to contain a lot of memorable moments within each song that I anticipate upon each listen, rather than a large sonic assault from beginning to end of a song. There's a section in krYlon (4:15-4:24) that makes the whole track worthwhile for me and it kind of sums up my opinion on the whole album. Small sections of freshness. I hope Exai will be like this concept + beats. !!

This. The thieves will steal it either way. It not leaking will not affect that in the slightest. As soon as it leaks, legitimate mp3s will be sent to preorderers and as soon as they get them it will be up on soulseek. If it doesn't leak it'll still be on soulseek on launch day so yeah it will make absolutely zero difference.

Not sure what are you talking about but... By ''not monitors'' i guess you mean not the closed-back design? If so for mixing/mastering doesn't matter much except for 'spatial' analyzing, but you have speakers to reference with anyway.

As for freq response these phones are ideal for mixing/mastering. They're not EQed (not perceived as...), or not as much.

Freq response of 'flat' headphones differs from freq response of 'flat' speakers but they both do perceive to sound 'flat'.

The main thing is to 'know' your headphones/speakers inside-out, in other words => how many critical listening

(not any kind listening) hours you have with them.

If you need answer from a real pro go to the gearslutz.com forum and see what professionals think about specific model. Nice place to learn lot of stuff about music production, if you don't know that already...but i can say what i know too.

the bolded part is what i meant, because hd650 are definitely tinkered with in the mid-bass range.

 

there's a quote from hd650 manual that hints at the fact that they're not ideal for mixing/mastering work:

IT's soaked in a lot of processing and various effects sooooo much better than all these half-assed musicians who just put everything through record crackle filter or bandpass or sonic decimator or fake tape hiss filter. Why the hate towards Actress? The last days I've been listening his three albums on Spotify repeatedly and I really like what I'm hearing. It's definitely a style on its own. Sounds fresh. Why comparing it to AE btw? I don't really see the connection.

Other than that Actress mentions Autechre in interviews I agree; apples and oranges.

The way I approach music is much more from a sculptural perspective. You build algorithms. You can layer those algorithms so they become marble-like. Autechre do the complete opposite to what I do. You can see the axis, you can feel what they’re rotating around certain things. What I do is the same but I smudge it completely, so you can feel the axis but you can’t get that clarity of where it is. I like things to drip. There’s execution and there’s perfection and even though I’m a perfectionist I don’t like having something that’s so perfect you can’t see the flaws. You have to have a sense of there being a flaw in it, because essentially I’m human and I want a human aspect always to be there in my music.

I don't hate him, but there is certainly something wrong with the level of worshipping of his releases from hip webzines up to specialist magazines like The Wire. I had listened to a lot of minimal techno and other non-idm electronic stuff back in 00's that had no attention from outside the scenes, and then Actress, sounding like complete and not always inspiring re-hash of those ideas, suddenly has unique style and fresh sound, talking about being opposite to Ae. A couple of years ago he also wrote on his twitter that AFX was god but current Zomby is probably better than AFX.

his newest track sounds like he's doing flying lotus vs zomby (at their worst) through a fucking bit crusher, what the bloody hell has happened is my question. I'm not arguing with the fact that people get genuine emotional resonance from it... but are any actual music producers here in any way impressed by his sound?

 

its interesting he would bring up Zomby because that's another artist who's amateur sound was mistaken by many as some kind of brilliant invention, when it seemed just sort of at best an 'enlightened amateur' approach.
